Urban Decay Vice 4

Urban Decay Vice 4 Review swatches

New for Holiday 2015, Urban Decay Vice 4 palette is here! Inspired by the classic UD shade Oil Slick, the packaging reflects the gorgeous, dimensional hues of an oil slick and is filled with rich, deep jewel tones in a mix of finishes from mattes to metallics. I’m sorry to say that I’m still sick, so I’m moving at sloth speed.

Even the box packaging is awesome.

The bag is gorgeous, with a sort of jagged broken mirror / spider web print that’s iridescent.

The actual palette packaging is stunning. It blows every previous Vice palette out of the water, though the Vice 2 is a close second in my book.

Vice 4 has a good mix of colors. I love Arctic, 1985, Beatdown, Flame, Fastball, Framed, Pandemonium, Harlot, Crowbar and Underhand. I’m not really a fan of Bones, Discreet, Grip, Robbery, Low. Bitter and Delete are super pigmented shades.

The Vice 4 palette contains .60 oz of eyeshadow (.03 oz each x 20). A typical Urban Decay eyeshadow single is $18 for .05 oz. For .6 oz of product, that’s 12 full size eyeshadows, which would cost you $216. Instead of 12 full size, you’re getting 20 (slightly more than half sized) shades. The Spectrum palette is 15 full size eyeshadows (.05 oz each x 15). This would normally cost you $270. So for $55 you’re getting 15 full size eyeshadows vs $60 for 12 full size eyeshadows of product / 20 shades. I personally think the Spectrum is a better deal, but that’s because I’m sold on the colors in that palette.

If you’re a die hard brights fan, I’d recommend checking out Spectrum. While Vice 4 does offer some really nice colors with Arctic, Grasshopper, Flame, 1985 and Beat Down, I think ultimately bright lovers will be happier with Spectrum.

However, if you love neutrals, I would argue that you will love the Vice 4. I count 11 neutrals – Bones, Discreet, Grip, Robbery, Low, Deadbeat, Bitter, Delete, Harlot, Crowbar and Framed, which give you many neutral options. You’ve got some fun shades – Arctic, C-Note, Grasshopper, Fastball, Flame, 1985, Beatdown, Underhand and Pandemonium. You have some matte / satin matte shades – Bones, Discreet, Bitter, Delete and Framed.

You can put together some pinky-purple looks with Harlot, Discreet, 1985, Pandemonium, Underhand and Beatdown. You can put together peachy-orange looks with Framed, Fastball, Flame and Bitter. Try out greens with C-Note, Grasshopper and Arctic. I actually think Fastball, Flame and Underhand would look nice together.

Which shades would you like to see become a part of the permanent lineup? For me I would love to see Arctic, Fastball, Flame, 1985, Beat Down and Pandemonium, join the lineup. Which do you like best – Vice 4 or Spectrum?

  1. It truly breaks my heart with how Urban Decay has handled this Spectrum Palette situation. I wanted it really bad but it was gone in a matter of 2 days on Sephora, plus all the beauty bloggers and such said it would be released in UD.Com at the end of October. Urban Decay had press release images of it everywhere on IG and YouTube then they slowly began to disappear. Every Spec pic in their IG has been deleted, the release day came and went and no palette. It’s so upsetting, some ppl say UB told them they couldn’t find a retailer who wanted to carry it, but come on they could put it on their own website. They are selling out of their flagship store in a CA but I live on the East coast…the whole thing is upsetting. It was my most wanted palette of the season, and I will never forgive myself for snatching it up when I saw it go live on Sephora vib exclusive.

  2. I am going to be the odd ball out. The Vice 4 colors looked terrible on me, but looked great in the box. I hate it when that happens. I am def going to try out the Spectrum.
    Thanks!

  3. Definitely saving my money for this one! I like that it has a mixture of brights and neutrals. And 1985 is gorgeous. But I could be partial since that was when I was born! Lol hope you feel better soon!!!!!!

  4. Hmm… Vice 4 or Spectrum… this is a toughie… I like that Vice has more variety… but Vice also has some colors that aren’t so fab… if I had to pick I’d probably go with Spectrum!
I do really love Fastball, Flame, and Beatdown!

  5. Generally as a palette is has good mix of colours. But for me – I counted 6 that I would really use: the greens and blues mostly. So that is not enough love in the palette for me to buy it. However I do think that there are some interesting shades in there for purple lovers such as yourself: Pandemonium and Beat down. Some of the shades looked a little dry/patchy and others looked like they would have too much fall out from the glitter. Thank you so much for your review when you are feeling so ill. Take it easy, everyone will understand.

    1. I am on the mend finally! All the echinacea tea + rest helped. I filmed a video review for this palette tonight and it will be live on my YT tomorrow. To me, this is a palette for more of a neutral fan, so I think if you love brights you should skip it and go for Spectrum 🙂

  6. The colors look amazing, but too much glitter for my puffy eyelids. I can’t wait to see the looks you come up with!

  7. WOW, this is a gorgeous palette. I don’t know how you manage it, but your swatches just get better and better, and they were perfection long ago!

  8. Spectrum is gorgeous but for me, Vice 4 is the clear winner. It’s more “me.” Plenty of wearable neutrals with some pops of colour to jazz things up a little. Just what I like. <3

  9. I’m with you this palette has some super nice shades but the Spectrum palette has my heart. 🙂

  10. I loved Spectrum at first sight, but I realized I already own 7 of the 15 shadows and have dupes for the other ones I like. I’m waffling on Vice4 but I’ll probably end up getting it during the winter VIB sale at Sephora.

  11. I think these are gorgeous but too many have glitter so I may have to pass on this one. Feel better.

  12. Fabulous packaging on the new Vice palette. I planned to pass on this, but your stunning swatches is making me WANT IT!!

  13. I want both palettes, though from the swatches I’ve seen, Spectrum looks like it has a little bit of an edge for quality. I like Vice 4’s packaging better, and I think the neutrals are at least very pretty shades.

From Vice 4, I’d like to see Flame, Fastball, Underhand, Harlot, Pandemonium, Arctic, Discreet, 1985 and Beatdown become permanent.

    1. I agree with you in that I think the Spectrum eyeshadows are better quality, and I love the colors better in it. I don’t think Vice 4 is terrible, but you can see from my swatches how some of the shades were very sheer on bare skin.

      1. I always wear primer, so I’ll be OK, but UD should have done a better job on some of these.
