Puppy Supplies: What You Need for a New Puppy
I’m so excited because this week I brought home a new puppy! Here are the puppy supplies that I felt I needed before I welcomed the new puppy into my home. I did all my shopping on Amazon, of course. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime!
My new puppy is a standard poodle and we’ve named her Nyx. She’s named after the Greek Goddess of the Night. It seemed appropriate because of Phaedra’s name, which is also Greek, means Bright. Nyx is 9 weeks old today.
Smart Pet Love Snuggle Puppy
One of the coolest puppy supplies I ran across when looking for puppy essentials was this Smart Pet Love Snuggle Puppy. It has a ‘real feel’ pulsing heartbeat that works off of AAA batteries. It also has warming packs that you can use with it to make the toy appear to be a warm pack member. It helps to ease crying, loneliness and separation anxiety in puppies. This will help prevent crying in the crate at night if you put the puppy crate in your room.
Internet’s Best Dog Bowl Set
You need a food and water dish for your puppy! This one is adorable. I prefer stainless steel for a set like this.
Petmate Compass Kennel Crate
A crate is an essential puppy supply. Crates give puppies a safe space if you train your dogs with them. This is a starter crate for Nyx, I’ll have to upgrade to a larger crate later. I think I went through 3 or 4 different ones for Phaedra. It’s important that the crate be tall enough for your dog.
Crate Dog Bed
You need a dog bed that fits inside the crate that is washable and easy to remove. Nyx loves this one.
Furhaven Dog Bed
I have multiple dog beds around the home for Phaedra, so I also bought some for Nyx. Dog beds are essential puppy supplies because they give the puppy something that’s theirs to lay on or play on. One of the things I also do with dog beds like this is train my dogs to ‘go to bed’ to lay on the bed and stay. It’s helpful if people come over and I don’t want the dogs to jump on them.
Much like human babies, puppies need to play under supervision. A playpen is definitely one of the most essential of puppy supplies for me because I work from home. I set the playpen right next to where I work so I can keep an eye on Nyx and Phaedra while I work. It also makes it easier for me to check her food and water, as well as take her out to go potty while potty training.
CYgoodluck Dog Brush
One thing I think people often overlook in a puppy supplies list is a good dog brush. With standard poodles, you must brush your dogs daily! They don’t have fur, they have hair, so it needs attention.
Every puppy supplies list should have a collar and leash! I just found this brand, Alcott. I really like their reflective stitching. I bought a set for Phaedra and for Nyx.
Nyx came with a tiny pink collar but once she’s a little larger I will switch her to the martingale style I use on Phaedra.
Comfort Zone Dog Calming Diffuser
One thing I didn’t order ahead of time that I wish I had was this Comfort Zone Dog Calming Diffuser. The one I bought just got here today. This makes it easier to introduce an adult dog and puppy to each other. I used to use a similar product with my cats and it helped a ton.
NewNewStar Clicker Trainer
It’s never too early to start click training! While I’ll be going to a clicker obedience school with Nyx, I want to start capturing and rewarding good behavior that she has right now. Clickers are the way to go!
Bone Dry Toy Basket
I bought this Bone Dry Toy Basket in a stylish striped grey to hold all of the puppy toys! It looks better than the clear plastic storage bin I’d been using. The colors in my home are all greys and blues, so it matches perfectly. If grey isn’t your thing it comes in a bunch of other colors too.
Puppy Supplies – Toys
An essential part of puppy supplies are toys. You need toys to keep your puppy entertained and engaged. If they don’t have toys, they’ll go after your shoes or anything else. At such a young age like this, they also often think your fingers or feet are toys! Redirect them by grabbing a toy and offering the toy instead. Here are my favorite toys.
Jumbo Lamb Chop
Since Phaedra loves the regular sized Lamb Chops we have, I bought the Jumbo size for Nyx. It’s bigger than she is right now! She loves to wrestle with it and lay on it. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see this on my Instagram Stories.
Nylabone Puppy Chew Ring
This trio of ring is good for babies! It helps them when they’re teething.
Petstages Cool Teething Stick
I actually bought two of these little guys because I keep one in the freezer and give the other one to Nyx.
Petstages Toss and Shake Ring
Nyx loves the balls at the end of this ring. I had a similar toy like this for Phaedra and she adored it.
Nylabone Happy Moppy Chew Toy
This is another type of toy that Phaedra loved. I think I’ve gone through 3 of them so I bought the smaller size for Nyx.
Outward Hound Invincible Gecko
I have two sizes of this guy, one for Phaedra and one for Nyx. They’re very tough!
Kong Puppy Toy
I think every dog needs a kong. You can put peanut butter or cheese inside them, or freeze them peanut butter inside and keep your puppy entertained.
I’m sure I’ll buy a million more toys for Nyx the way I have for Phaedra, but my puppy supplies list is a good start.
