By Starlight
This is more of a red-toned purple matte than a blue-toned purple. I was hugely disappointed by this color. The pictures on the website led me to believe it was a blue-based purple, but it does not appear to be to me. It appears to be a red-based purple.
Shady Lady
Beautiful deep magenta with hints of hot pink matte. I feel like the website swatch was accurate for this and I absolutely love this shade.
6six6
Blackened red matte. The website picture was off for this one too, but you can change the color by using Nyx Black Lips pencil liner or NARS Train Bleu to make the color look correct.
Summer
Bright peachy coral matte. I don’t think this color looks flattering on me when worn on its own.
Belladonna
Cherry red (blue undertones) matte. I love this one!
Bang Bang
Bright traffic cone orange matte. I also love this one, lots of fun.
In most of the pictures below I am wearing only Melt Cosmetics lipstick, no other makeup. I’m trying to feel more comfortable with my skin even though I have rosacea.
Melt Cosmetics has excellent customer service. When I emailed them to tell them that I was disappointed in By Starlight not being a blue-based purple, they sent Bang Bang and Belladonna to me as replacement colors. They wanted to fix the issue. That’s more than many companies would do. This just reiterates to me how important it is to reach out to a company when you’re having an issue. Some companies will want to fix the issue. Others will dodge you.
As I stated in the video, I’ve gotten excellent wear time for all colors, 8 or more hours each. You’ll see minimal wear at the center of your lips if you’re eating and drinking, but otherwise you’re good. It doesn’t migrate off onto your teeth or anywhere else, especially if you prep your lips first. The colors are all very pigmented, so you don’t have to keep layering and layering to achieve opacity.
Shady Lady and By Starlight stained my hand like crazy. This is a great thing on the lips, in my opinion, because your color will stay around for a long time.
I think that if you’re looking for lipsticks that are gluten free, paraben free, cruelty free, vegan and come in bright colors, Melt Cosmetics is a great choice. They’ve got a good matte formula for you to wear that isn’t uncomfortable or drying the way mattes can sometimes be. They’ve got a good color range.
I have to tell you that I’m just finishing up my review and I LOVE SUMMER! Also, as I see it on you, it’s gorgeous! Oh well to each its own. lol. Great review.
test
I am glad you did this review. It gives me a better perspective of what would look good on me. For example, I thought Summer was going to be similar to Lime Crime Cosmopop, but on here, it appears more coral.
Omgosh, LOVE!! Starlight, Shady Lady, Belladonna (2 on their website) I want so bad. I want Summer too but I am afraid how it’ll look on me. They definitely look great on you!
Thanks for the great suggestion!
Beautiful! I heard the last one is a great dupe for Prince Noir – thoughts? I love that one on you the most, esp with the hair and nose ring! <3
I don’t own Prince Noir, though I do think the color might be similar. thank you 🙂
I’m not sure if someone already suggested this but it looks like Illamasqua Kontrol is listed as a blue-violet…maybe the purple shade you are looking for?

That’s so strange! I didn’t even buy them very long ago!
I got a reply from them, and apparently the carmine thing is because they’re developing new shades which may contain it in the future, which they will label accordingly, but none of the current ones do.
Still strange that so many of the other ingredients have changed though! Hopefully the quality is still great.
Most of the swatches I’ve seen for this brand look great, these are no exception. I’m excited to see what colors they come out with next. Maybe they will come out with a true blue-based purple after your contacting them.
Good for you for getting out of your comfort zone. It’s a hard thing to do. Usually the flaws we see in ourselves seem so glaring when really no one else notices or cares. I certainly didn’t notice anything wrong with your skin!
Thank you for your kind words! I’m looking forward to seeing what they do too. Like I mentioned above, I think they have excellent customer service and make a great product. I was just disappointed with the colors not matching their website. And it’s not like they were off by a tiny bit, it was a lot, even with my calibrated monitor. I know some color variation exists, but not that much!
I wish more makeup companies were honest with their swatches. I get it, they want to sell their product by making it look better, but the truth is going to get out as soon as a customer gets their product, right? So why bother, not just for integrities sake, but for the sake of avoiding complaints? In By Starlight’s case, the swatches still look great, but they should have advertised it as the red based purple it is. I’m interested in bright/unusual colored lipsticks, but so many indie brands that offer them either misrepresent the actual color, the actual opacity or the actual wear. And then there are the ones that use the same lip photo over and over, photoshopping in the color. Maybe their product is great, but come on, how can I trust that? I guess I don’t know where the line is between a company portraying their product at it’s best and false advertising. Rant over!
I have found Morgana Cryptoria to be very accurate. I have some Portland Black Lipstick Company products to review, and they seem fairly accurate too (for unusual colors.
I have one Morgana Cryptoria that a friend gave me, its not an unusual color, but I like it! I’m on the verge of buying PBLC, Temptalia’s swatches are very promising. Some brands with unusual colors like Colored Raine, Lip Bar, Aboni, Ka’oir. and My beauty addiction have cool colors, but don’t seem to have as many customer swatches/reviews and have some dubious official swatches. Have you tried any of those?
I’ve heard great things about Ka’oir. I ordered some eyeshadow samples to review from My Beauty Addiction but haven’t yet had time and I don’t think I got any lipstick samples, so I can’t really comment on them.
I’ll be reviewing Whip Hand Cosmetics in the future and I believe they have some unusual shades!
Cool, I’ve never heard of Whip Hand, I’ll be looking forward to your review. One thing seems certain, unusual lip colors are getting more and more accessible, and I’m glad to have more than a few options for who I buy them from.
Omg Belladonna, Summer & Bang Bang need to be in my makeup bag! I think I’d like Shady Lady too, it’s so vibrant.
I think That Bang Bang would be stunning on you
love these bold colors. i think summer! is my favorite…
It would be pretty on you!
The shades are lovely and they look gorgeously matte on you, but it seems Melt have completely reformulated their products since you bought the lipsticks – the ingredients list is much shorter and totally different now: http://www.meltcosmetics.com/pages/ingredients
Most disappointingly, they’re still claiming to be vegan, yet list carmine as an ingredient D: I’m currently awaiting an email response from them on this subject.
All of the shades are beautiful, but i can see myself in by star light, shady lady, and bang bang
By Starlight and Shady Lady would definitely pop on you.
Your skin looks fantastic!! (By the way, are you still using the Embryolisse?) I must have Belladonna 2, 6six6 and Space Cake – I’m dying because two of those have been sold out for ages. Shady Lady looks stunning on you!
I do use Embryolisse on and off 🙂
I LOVE Belladonna! They all look so cute on you!
Thank you!
Your skin looks great without foundation. I gave up on it years ago because it ALWAYS looks like paint to me. I really think that most of the time foundation looks worse than whatever you were trying to cover.
You are too kind! I have rosacea so I often feel like I need foundation to hide the blotchy and even out my skintone. I prefer how I look in the 6six6 face shot to the rest.
Love love love shady lady! I’ll check out this brand
You know of my love for all things super bright, it’s fantastic
I was disappointed with By Starlight as well. It looks very different on me compared to their photo, but I can work with it. 6six6 is definitely my favorite and I wear it often!
Yay 🙂
Love that last look! I had never heard of melt cosmetics before reading your blog. Gotta check em out!
Glad you like them 🙂
I’m definitely itching to try some – Shady Lady and Belladonna have caught my eye!
They seem to have replaced Belladonna with Belladonna 2, an even more blue-based red.
Thanks for the heads up!
6six6 isvery pretty, but maybe i wont use a black liner maybe i would opt to leave it that way . or just add gold gloss or use a light brown liner
It’s awesome with gold gloss
