Glossier Priming Moisturizer

Glossier Priming Moisturizer Review

Today I’m sharing with you the Glossier Priming Moisturizer. The talented makeup artist (and my friend) James Vincent was the person who first turned me on to using moisturizer (Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentrate) as a primer in addition to moisturizer. It’s definitely not a new concept, and many makeup artists prefer a good moisturizer to a primer, especially because some of them feel that primers contain too much silicone and slide right off the face. That doesn’t happen with a good moisturizer!

Key Ingredients

  • Shea Butter, Hyaluronic Acid and Mushroom Super Hydrator (for mega moisturizer)
  • Anti-Redness Complex (aloe, tea and honey extracts to reduce redness, soothe and calm)
  • Antioxidants (Vitamins A, C, and E to help protect and nourish the skin)

First and foremost, this moisturizer does not break me out. It doesn’t have a fragrance that I can detect and it doesn’t  irritate my skin. It does have some sort of strange fume (nothing I can smell though) that if I get it too close to my eyes it causes my eyes to water for a few seconds. And to be fair, the website says to avoid the eye area.

Second, if I’m applying this before I apply foundation, I don’t slather it on.  I still apply a moisturizer with SPF liberally before I apply any primer. I apply the Glossier Priming Moisturizer more the way that I apply a serum. I put a dollop about the size of a quarter in my hands and then dab it on my cheeks, forehead, nose and chin, then gently work it in. After that, I apply my foundation. If I have any dry patches, I do add a bit extra to those areas. The texture is very liquidy and runny, but it absorbs into my skin pretty quickly. It definitely plumps it up and I feel like, when your skin is well moisturized, it makes your pores appear smaller and your makeup go on smoothly.

I should mention that I think the packaging is nice and minimalistic. I like the pale pink and white packaging and font choices.

I think it has a great list of ingredients that are good for the skin. Hyaluronic acid and shea butter are two great ingredients for moisture – hyaluronic acid draws it in and retains it while shea butter deeply nourishes and moisturizes. I do feel like it does help to calm my skin, even if I don’t see a complete reduction in my redness from rosacea. In addition to using this before makeup, you can also use it as a daytime or nighttime moisturizer.

As far as the value and pricing goes, the Glossier Priming Moisturizer is $25 for 1.7 oz, putting it on the pricey side when you compare it to my favorite moisturizer without SPF, the Embroylisse Lait-Creme Concentrate which is $28 for 2.54 oz.

I do feel like this gives you a smooth canvas to apply your foundation and it’s chock full of good ingredients. I absolutely love how it makes my skin feel before I apply my foundation. I’m not sure that it prolongs the wear of my foundation, as I feel like setting powder and makeup setting spray do a better job of that for me than using just this primer. Since it’s on the pricey side, I’m not sure that this is a necessity, but it’s definitely nice to have.

Pros

  • Great ingredients
  • Non-irritating for my sensitive skin
  • Does a great job moisturizing the skin
  • No fragrance

Cons

  • Does make my eyes water briefly
  • Pricey

What do you think of the Glossier Priming Moisturizer? Are you a fan of face primer or moisturizer before foundation?

  1. Glossier isn’t a brand I’m familiar with. Since I use both primers and moisturizers, being able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone would be ideal

  2. I still haven’t tried anything by Glossier, even though I see their products talked about on many blogs I read. This one sounds intriguing!

  3. Apart from the fact it would be hard to get in Australia, I would hesitate because I have an excellent daily moisturizer and primer. However, because you are also someone who needs to be careful about what can go on your skin, I would give it a try. It would certainly combine two steps into one.
I hope you enjoyed the wedding.

  4. I’ve tried using just moisturizer, and if I’m not going to be wearing makeup for very long, it works fine. But, with my oily skin, I prefer having something that helps prolong my foundation more than moisturizer.
