The Dark Side of Indie Beauty

The Dark Side of Indie Beauty. Today I’m sharing my little rant on the elitism sometimes found within the indie beauty community. I discuss the meaning of indie business, as well as why elitism within the indie makeup community can be a bad thing.

If you’re looking to join a positive makeup community that is supportive of both indie and mainstream brands, as well as low-buys and no-buys, you should check out the PhyrraNyx Facebook group. The men and women in my community are awesome. We share makeup looks, tips, and tricks in there.

What’s your favorite makeup community? Who are your favorite indie brands?

  1. I find that elitism happens in so many areas of the beauty community. Its sad really…

  2. This is truly a great video, I’m so glad you made it.
Plus…LOVE your eye makeup in it?

  3. I am so sorry to hear that people were treating you that way! That is disgusting regardless of the context.
As far as the label Indie, I think part of the confusion started when handmade products became much more popular and more widely known. There have always been lab manufactured Indie brands, but most people didn’t call them Indie and didn’t really think about whether they were hand made or not. Then when handmade (in the home, in small batches) products really took off (both cosmetics and nail polish) Indie started to take on a new meaning and somehow it got mixed up with Independent. I 100% agree with you- if the company is independently owned, and not a large corporation, it is Indie, regardless of whether all, or some of their products are handmade or lab made.

  4. Have you noticed that hateful people like the ones who harassed you typically are not doing anything as extraordinary as their targets are with their lives and thus are envious? Misery loves company. I am so sorry that you experienced such a dark period; I had no idea, even though I was following you during that time period. Thank you for finding strength and realizing your talents are greatly appreciated and admired. You are a rare gem, Courtney.

  5. I swear, arrogance is omnipresent! Whenever companies or people raise their noses to feed their egos, I don’t want to do business with their brands. Thanks for bringing up this important topic. I appreciate your research and explanations so much.

  6. Also, how dare people treat other people like that! I’m glad you made it through to the other side. You are amazing’ always remember that. Women should prop up each other, not tear them down.

  7. I had no idea, but I’m not surprised. I spent many years fostering an online community and facilitating discussions, but bombed out on Reddit so badly someone messaged me and suggested I leave. I did. Thankfully, I discovered you, you recommended your Facebook group, and I feel I’ve found a home.
