Today I’m sharing a makeup tutorial on how to make Kat Von D Foundation work for dry skin. The Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation has an amazing shade range, but it’s definitely easier for normal to oily skin to wear. People with dry or very dry skin, like me, struggle to apply this foundation without having it cake up and cling to dry patches.

The Kat Von D Foundation is a very full coverage foundation. It’s made to conceal all flaws and last all night long. It’s too full coverage for my needs, but I can appreciate that other people need that sort of coverage.

In a last ditch effort to make the Kat Von D Foundation work for my dry skin, I tried mixing it with Nyx Pro Foundation Mixer in Opalescent. The first 5 ingredients in Opalescent are Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Caprylyl Methicone, and Talc. The first 5 ingredients in Lock-It are Water, Dimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, and Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate. They’re both silicone-based, so they mix together without any issues.

Mixing the two together makes it workable for me. It doesn’t cling to my dry patches. It adds a subtle iridescence and sheen to my skin so that it’s not full coverage and flat. The foundation is more of a light-medium coverage, which is perfect for  my needs. I want to blur imperfections and hide my redness from rosacea. This mix makes it possible. I can then conceal with a bit of L1 Neutral.

You can see how well the foundation blends in with my skintone. I forgot to put a primer on for this video, but it looks amazing with Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer. I hated how my blush looked, so I tried layering multiple blushes. While the Glossier Cloud Paint in Puff blended out great on the back of my hand, I didn’t like how it looked on my cheeks, so I layered other blushes on top. Now, that highlighter though, I love it so much! Doesn’t it look amazing?

  1. Ohhh I’m so glad you found a way to make it work for you 🙂 I know in your vid you were saying you thought maybe you had found one. Good for you for being persistent 🙂

Not related to the post at hand but I wanted to tell you that I bought the IDUN foundation in Jorunn from your recommendation and I am thrilled! It is really what I have wanted so many other foundations to be– actually neutral and more remarkably actually hydrating!! I was pretty amazed. I think it will mix well with other foundations and with white mixers if I want to lift the shade. I felt like it was a bargain for what I paid for it considering I have paid much more for high-end foundations that did not work out. Just wanted to thank you again for putting this on my radar 🙂

    1. You are so welcome! I’m thrilled you love it as much as I do. It’s my favorite foundation. Wearing it today 🙂

      1. Yes! I feel like the best thing about it is it just looks nice on my skin without me having to spend 15 minutes with a beauty blender trying to force it to look good.
I think I must be your west coast twin because I also have pale skin, green hooded eyes, and rosacea. Please keep doing what you’re doing and posting your amazing content. I admire you and your site a lot!

  3. Thanks So Much for Sharing Your Thoughts on the Kat Von D Foundation for Dry Skin, I Really Appreciate it! I Have Never Tried Kat Von D Foundation but I’m Definitely Considering b/c I Have Heard You Talk About How Great Their Foundations are for Fair Skin in the Past! I Also Have Extremely Dry Skin All Over b/c I Have Hypothyroidism and it Has Made My Skin So Dry So I Always Try to Look for Foundations That are Great for Dry Skin! One of the Main Reasons That I Want to Try the Kat Von D Foundation is b/c it’s Fuller Coverage! I Prefer Full Coverage Foundation b/c I Have Some Acne Scars That I’m Really Self Conscious About and I Want to Cover Them the Best That I Can! Well Thanks Again Courtney for Your Awesome Feedback on Kat Von D Foundation, Have a Great Day! – Jana

  4. !!! oh my god, you may have just salvaged my bottle of KVD foundation. I gave up on it recently and have been relying on my KVD Lock-It Concealer in L1 just to cover up my imperfections (undereyes, discolored acne scars, etc) and I liked how that looked so far, but I’ve eyeing that NYX mixer in Opalescent anyway. I must give this a try!
