The Best Waterproof Sleep and Fitness Tracker

The Best Waterproof Fitness and Sleep Tracker: Oura Ring Review

Best Waterproof Sleep and Fitness Tracker

Hey friends! Today I’m sharing a long overdue review on the best waterproof sleep and fitness tracker: the Oura Ring. I’ve had my Oura ring for over a year at this point, and I’m on my second ring, so I feel like I have a really good perspective to share with you. I wouldn’t call myself a huge biohacker, but I’m definitely learning more about the topic. I wanted a fitness device that I could wear in the water and never had to take off.  I needed a fitness device that tracks my steps and activities, because that motivates me to do more. And for the love of Gods I needed one that wasn’t horribly ugly. Is it too much to ask for a minimalist design?

I got tired of my clunky bellabeat bracelet and the fitbit gave me a rash, so when Dave showed me the Oura ring, I said maybe that will work for me.

Now let’s talk about how it looks. I chose the black metal Balance because it goes with my gothic aesthetic. I also got a sizing kit to help me figure out what size to buy. I wanted the Oura ring to fit as many of my fingers as possible, so originally I ordered a size 9 from their guide. After losing over 30 lbs last year, my Oura ring had gotten really loose on my fingers and I was using an enso ring to help hold it in place. I ended up losing my original Oura ring, it’s somewhere in my living room but I’ve torn the place apart without finding it, so I bought a new one in size 8. The size 8 can fit the thumb, index & middle finger on both of my hands, but I prefer to wear it on my thumb. This is the most aesthetically pleasing fitness tracking device I’ve owned to date.

I love that it doesn’t look like a clunky tracking device.

The Best Waterproof Fitness and Sleep Tracker: Oura Ring Review

The Oura ring is the most advanced sleep & fitness tracker currently available from what I’ve researched. There’s a body temperature sensor, a heart rate monitor and an accelerometer, which tracks motion and movement. It tracks heart rate variability, which is an advanced heart rate measurement.  It constantly monitors your body temperature, measures blood volume,  and tracks your movements. It gives you insightful baselines of information to help you grow and improve. It really lets you tap into how your body is doing and helps you to be more aware of your health.

Readiness score – this is a rolling score that takes your sleep and activities into consideration and tells you whether or not today is a day to push yourself or train hard. So on days when the Oura ring says I’m at 80 or above I push myself. On days when I’m low, I take that into consideration and go easy.

Sleep Tab – this measures the quality of your sleep. Sometimes I feel like I sleep forever but I’m still tired. The Oura ring shows me how I’m often lacking deep sleep. This has proven to be one of the most useful features for me. I’ve been trying a lot of things to improve my deep sleep.

It tracks your heart rate variability. This is important for indicating quality of sleep. Someone who is an athlete will have a higher HRV than someone like me, who was never too active until 5 years ago.

The Oura ring can tell when I’m doing low medium and high activity levels, so the difference between me walking the dogs and me playing Beatsaber is pretty easy to see in the app.

So would I buy the Oura ring again? I already did! That’s why I wanted to get this review up to you. I honestly find the sleep tracking part to be invaluable to me because I never knew how I could sleep for 8 or 10 hours and still be tired. Finding out I struggle to hit deep sleep allowed me to talk to my dr about it and come up with a plan. I love the fact that I can wear it in the shower.

I only need to charge mine once or twice a week. What I often do though is take the Oura ring off in the shower and put it on the charger while I’m in the shower, then slip it back on my finger.

I wish the Oura ring had some additional functionality built into the app. I would love the options to track my period & food with the app. I could track my period with the bellabeat.

There are only a few downsides to the Oura ring. The Oura ring is not cheap. Mine was $299 + $15 shipping, both times. It’s made of titanium, which is really tough. However, it can’t be resized if you change sizes. It also scratches fairly easily. Right now it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get your Oura ring.

Who is this for? If you’re a biohacker and trying to push your body to the limits, the Oura ring is for you. If you want a waterproof fitness and sleep tracker, the Oura ring is for you. If you’re an average person who wants accurate information in a pretty package, the Oura ring is for you.

The Oura ring is Phyrra approved!

  1. It’s really cool that the fitness tracker is in ring form. It looks really nice. I would not have guessed it wasn’t just a regular ring from looking at it.

  2. Amazing! I am on my second Fitbit but never looked into how other tracker technology and designs have evolved in recent years.

  3. I have read about this before but I was not really sure. Your review makes me want it more then ever…………… but as you say the price is really high.
