Row 2 – Fashion Addict – Taboo – Friend Zone – Brownie Points – Hopscotch – Sand Dollar – Wild West
Row 3 – Sin City – Anarchy
Row 4 – Tiki Hut – Tuscan Sun

As I’m running out of room in my Z-Palettes, I had to buy this amazing new holographic Z-Palette for these Makeup Geek shades. I bought the smaller holographic Z-Palette too, because I love holo! Plus, the smaller one is better suited to travel so I can put together my own quad.

I’ve seen a lot of people on Youtube and blogs say that pressed purple eyeshadows are hard to formulate. I’m not sure of why, but a lot of the purples I’ve seen lately from a lot of brands – big and small – have been misses. Yet, my loose purples are easy to work with and gorgeous. Some of the purples in this set have such potential to be gorgeous but they turned out to be difficult to use.

Swatched on primer.

Makeup Geek Hot Pants swatch

Hot Pants
Bright orchid with a purple shift and a shimmery finish.
This is my favorite shade out of the new releases. It’s gorgeous on its own, layered on top of pinks, purples, and blacks. It’s a VERY versatile shade. It’s also the easiest to use. If you like this color, I highly recommend it.

Makeup Geek Fashion Addict swatch

Fashion Addict
Medium orchid purple with a matte finish.
I love the tone of this color but it kept blending away when I tried to build it up for a look. I wish it had better pigmentation and texture. It was hard to work with. This was also a weirdly crumbly shade. Mine broke in transit.

Makeup Geek Rebel swatch

Rebel
Deep dusty purple with a gold overlay and a shimmery finish.
This is a lovely duotone. It’s best if you pat it on, as it can be a bit patchy otherwise.

Makeup Geek Taboo swatch

Taboo
Ultra-deep raisin purple with a matte finish.
This was a very difficult shade to work with. Not my favorite. It’s a brown-toned shade with hints of purple.

Makeup Geek Pillow Talk swatch

Pillow Talk
Soft lilac with a silver shift and a shimmery finish
This is a frosty light pinky purple.

Makeup Geek Friend Zone swatch

Friend Zone
Dusty purple brown with a matte finish
To me this is a taupe grey brown matte. It was a pain to work with.

Makeup Geek Toxic swatch

Toxic
Deep eggplant purple with a shimmery finish.
This is a pretty eggplant purple.

Makeup Geek Brownie Points swatch

Brownie Points
Cool milk chocolate with a matte finish
A cool-toned midtone brown matte, not easy to work with. I’m surprised that so many of these mattes were difficult.
Makeup Geek Chit Chat swatch

Chit Chat
Medium periwinkle with a shimmery finish.
This was an absolutely awful color to work with. This was actually the most difficult color in the collection for me.

Makeup Geek Hopscotch swatch

Hopscotch
Bright iris with a matte finish.
I love the color but this wasn’t easy to work with. I think it’s best to use this shade to blend out the edges of other colors.
Makeup Geek Venom swatch

Venom
Deep moss green with a golden with a shimmery finish.
This is a gorgeous color and was easy to work with. If you love greens this would make for an interesting smoky eye or liner.

Makeup Geek Sand Dollar swatch

Sand Dollar
Porcelain pink gray with a matte finish.
This color is really close to my skintone so it doesn’t easily show up on me. It had to be really built up, and was not easy to work with. It’s best used to blend out the edges of other shades.

Makeup Geek Casino swatch

Casino
Medium tangerine with a shimmery finish.
Gorgeous, fun, bright orange that I found easy to use.

Makeup Geek Wild West swatch

Wild West
Rich rose brown with a matte finish.
This was a pretty good matte shade.

Makeup Geek Sin City swatch

Sin City
Vibrant marigold with a shimmery finish.
This is a pretty and easy shimmery shade to work with.

Makeup Geek Tiki Hut swatch

Tiki Hut
Medium tawny brown with a matte finish.
This matte was pretty easy to work with. I also love the name, not gonna lie.

Makeup Geek Anarchy swatch

Anarchy
Medium marsala with a shimmery finish.
This is a shade that I can see being very popular.

Makeup Geek Tuscan Sun swatch

Tuscan Sun
Medium salmon pink with a matte finish.
This color was one of the best mattes in this set for me.

For this look (see the full details here) I applied primer, then used UD Walk of Shame as a base shade, to make it easier to blend out my hood color. I applied Fashion Addict to the lid and hood, and felt like the color just kept disappearing as I would try to blend it out. I used Confection to blend out the edges and that helped a bit. I layered Hot Pants on top of Fashion Addict on the lid and LOVED the result. I used a bit of Phantom to highlight under the brows and at the inner corner.

I love Makeup Geek and they make a lot of great colors, but I felt like there were a lot of ‘problem children’ shades in this set. Overall I don’t feel like most of the shades are up to the normal standard for most of the pressed colors. As much as I love the hue of Fashion Addict, and the great name, I would skip this color as it’s challenging to work with. I would also skip Taboo, Friend Zone, Brownie Points, Chit Chat, Hopscotch, and Sand Dollar.

The shades that I like best and found the easiest to work with in this set are Hot Pants, Rebel, Toxic, Venom, Casino, Sin City, Tiki Hut and Tuscan Sun.

  1. I’m so lucky, I ordered Anarchy, Tuscan Sun, Tiki Hut, Hot Pants, and Wild West the day they went on sale and before reading any reviews (I already had Casino and Sun City from the Vegas Lights palette). I happened to pick the best ones!! Thanks for your honest review, I think I will skip all the rest (I like the look of Venom, but I already have Typhoon, and it looks fairly similar).

  2. Hi! I just discovered your blog because I was looking for Makeup Geek swatches. I’ve read almost all your Makeup Geek posts (as well as some others) and I just wanted to drop a note to say THANK YOU! You post THE BEST swatches (your post on a bunch of MUG mattes is by far the best I’ve ever come across). They are so clear, with good lighting, and I love how you show so many side-by-side. That is SO incredibly helpful! It doesn’t hurt that we have similar skin tones and similarly-shaped eyes. 🙂 Also, I find your reviews to be on-point – for example, I bought Chit Chat and was sorely disappointed by it, too – so that’s an added bonus that I feel like I trust your reviews!!! So, thanks a million. You’re really awesome at this. 🙂

  3. Thank you sooo much for your review-especially letting us know how blendable/easy to work with the shades are-I just feel like unless I’m totally in love with it, I won’t buy it if it’s too difficult to work with, but thankfully those that are really lovely and nicer pigmentation-I really love! When I first saw them in the gorgeous holographic Z palette(love!!!) I said oh wonderful for summer-but I agree, disappointing in the mattes, and just a lot that just aren’t there. Not enough there to work with, pigmentation, richness lacking…like you said problem child! I really like Venom and that would make an interesting liner shade too so that’s great, and I also really like Tuscan Sun(similar to a shade I have in the Manny which I love), and also Hot Pants, and Tiki Hut I like the name too lol! I think the ones you picked out as faves with compliment the Manny! (oh my gosh that Insomniac shade in that palette is awesome!)

  4. I love Venom but I’m not so sure about the others. They could have been outstanding but they seem to miss the mark.

  5. Thank you for your honest reviews! I had a whole pile of these shadows in my cart, and I’m going to hold off for now. It seems most of the ones I really wanted are the ones that didn’t work so well for you.

  6. I had bought Tuscan Sun and Tiki Hut when they were first released! Very happy with those colors. I love Rebel swatched but it just seems like too much effort to work with unfortunately!

  7. Rebel is a really cool shade! That’s a bummer there were some bad formulas in here. Maybe they’ll reformulate. I do love the eye look you created. SO pretty!

  8. I can’t believe I’m still yet to try any Makeup Geek eyeshadows, especially as so many people rave about them! I especially love the look of Venom, Toxic and Anarchy from this line-up, but it’s a shame that not all of the shades are up to scratch!

    1. Venom, Toxic and Anarchy are 3 good ones! You should definitely try some Makeup Geek. They do make a lot of great colors, like Corrupt, Phantom, Poolside, Mermaid, Shark Bait, Peacock, Pixie Dust, Confection, Stealth, Barcelona Beach, Peach Smoothie, Sorbet, Beaches and Cream, Creme Brulee, Cupcake, Glamorous, Cinderella, Vanilla Bean, Prom Night, Drama Queen, Homecoming, Cosmopolitan, Moondust, Mango Tango, Galaxy, Graphite, Typhoon, Secret Garden… lots of great colors.

  9. I’ve been looking for a replacement for Urban Decay’s Infamous from the Mariposa Palette. I was hoping that Fashion Addict would be it. But it’s getting horrible reviews. Do you have any other suggestions?

    1. Sugarpill 2am is similar, but it’s one of those colors that I had trouble with even from Sugarpill.

      1. Thanks for the ideas. I may just have to mix Freakshow and Woodstock from Urban Decay to get a similar color. Infamous was the most beautiful bright on me!
