Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad Review
Hello beautiful friends! Today I’m sharing my Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad review with you. I’ve had this palette for a while, and I’ll be honest with you about why it took me so long to write about it: I don’t typically wear shades this subdued. After all, I’m a Bright Winter who reaches for saturated color. However, the Kaleidos eyeshadow formula is so good that I had to break this quad out and play with it, and Accentuate turned out to be the shade that makes my eyes pop harder than I ever expected.

What is the Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad?
Kaleidos describes the Venus Trap quad palette as a harmony of cool-toned nude mattes with a hint of pink, paired with a chromatic taupe glitter, and invites you to “entrap hearts with magnetic mystique.” Very femme fatale of them. The brand also makes four key claims for this formula:

Having worn it, I can tell you the formula delivers on all four. In fact, this is the same formula as the rest of the Kaleidos quads, and it’s one of the best eyeshadow formulas I’ve used at any price.

Kaleidos is a Shanghai-based indie beauty brand, which puts it firmly in the C-beauty category. Zoey Pu, a former beauty blogger and cosmetics marketer, founded the brand alongside Tony Chen and Mark Henry. Kaleidos is cruelty free, and the Venus Trap quad is vegan. The Packaging
The Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad uses the same slim compact as the rest of the quad line, and I love it. It’s small enough to live in my makeup bag, sturdy enough to travel with, and pretty enough to leave out on my vanity. The back of the quad also confirms the cruelty-free and vegan status.
Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad Swatches
Swatches are the heart of any Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad review, so here are mine, photographed on my pale olive skin indoors in indirect daylight and outdoors on a cloudy Dutch day.
I swatched on the KIKO Milano Neutral Eye Primer. The photo above was taken indoors in indirect daylight.
I tried to take the photo above in direct sunlight outdoors, but it was a cloudy day here in the Netherlands, so there wasn’t much sun to work with.
The last swatch photo above was taken in indirect cloudy sunlight outdoors. I like the bricks as a neutral backdrop.
These shades are quiet on the hand, especially Base and Diffuse. On the eyes, however, they do something completely different, and Accentuate in particular reads far more dramatic on the lid than it does on my hand.
The Formula: Texture, Pigmentation, and Fallout
Kaleidos sent me this quad in PR back in September 2024, so I’ve had it for quite a while, and the Base shade is the one I’ve used the most.
The formula is amazing, and it’s the reason this palette earned a review even though the color story sits outside my usual range. The mattes feel incredibly smooth and blend into each other seamlessly with very little effort. Because they’re so soft, you can apply them with your fingertips whenever you don’t want to reach for a brush, and the pigmentation shows up in a single layer.
I love using the Base shade all over, since it reminds me a bit of MAC Yogurt and it’s flattering on my eyes. Accentuate is my favorite shade in the palette, as it really makes my blue green eyes pop. Diffuse, meanwhile, is a nice supporting shade with Accentuate and Base.
Radiate is the shade that surprised me. It’s a glitter rather than a duochrome, and it’s truly buildable. Pressed on lightly with a fingertip, it gives you dispersed sparkle over whatever matte is underneath. Keep packing it on, though, and it turns into a proper liquid chrome lid. That’s why I prefer to press it on with my fingertips or with a silicone finger brush, since both methods pack the shimmer down instead of scattering it. This shade is also the one that is prone to fallout. Fortunately, you can minimize the fallout by using your finger or a damp brush for application.

For this look featuring the Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad, I applied the Base shade all over the lid and lower lid. Then I used a fluffy rounded brush to pat the Diffuse shade into the inner corner and outer corner of the eye. Next, I used the Accentuate shade along the lower lid. After that, I pressed the Radiate shade into the lid with my fingertips. Finally, I finished the look by tapping Star Surfer under the brow and on top of Radiate. Here’s how it came together. I was surprised by how intense the Accentuate shade is!
It’s very rare for me to do a full cool-toned neutral look with nothing bold in it. As a Bright Winter, I’m always drawn to saturated hues.
I love how Kaleidos Venus Trap works with my pale olive skin and cyan eyes.
What Else I’m Wearing
On the rest of my face I wore the Iconic London Underglow Blurring Primer under Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin Foundation in 2.5 Olive. For the cheeks I draped two Huda Beauty Blush Filter shades, Ube Cream and Ube Berry, keeping the lighter shade near my eyes and along the top of my cheeks and the deeper one through the middle of the cheek to shape my face. Then I used Kaleidos Star Surfer, a silver champagne pink multichrome highlighter, on top of the lid for extra dimension and along the cheekbones above the blush. There’s no highlighter on my nose in these photos. Instead, that glow is the Underglow primer coming through the foundation. Lips are Peripera Star Plum Pink Ink Velvet topped with a bit of Star Surfer at the center of the lips.
Accentuate is the shade that sold me on this quad. It’s a smoldering gunmetal brown, and it makes my blue-green-cyan eyes pop in a way I wasn’t expecting from a palette this subdued.
One note on the lid in these photos: I layered Kaleidos Star Surfer over Radiate for extra dimension, so the champagne pink flash you’re seeing is Star Surfer rather than Radiate on its own. Even so, Radiate absolutely holds its own without it, and it reads as a truer silver taupe when you wear it alone.
When and How I Wear This
I recently went to meet my new huisarts, the Dutch equivalent of a GP, and to make sure I looked polished and put together I used Kaleidos Venus Trap. First, I applied Base all over the lid and lower lid. Next, I used a smoky liner brush to run Accentuate along the upper and lower lash line as a softly smoked liner. Then, with a small fluffy brush, I added a bit of Diffuse to the outer crease. After that, I popped a bit of Kaleidos Star Surfer on my lid and at the inner corner. Finally, I finished with a coat of Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara.
Wear Test: How Long Does Venus Trap Last?
Kaleidos Venus Trap lasts all day on me with an eyeshadow primer underneath. So far I’ve tested it with the Kaleidos Tone Activator Eye Primer and with the KIKO Milano Neutral Eye Primer. Both held the color all day until I took my makeup off, with no creasing and no fading.
Who Should Buy the Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad?
Do you have cool or neutral undertones? Are you in the market for a neutral palette that isn’t warm beige or golden brown? Do you have blue, green, hazel, or cyan eyes like mine? Would a small palette that does everyday makeup without any thinking suit you? Do you have hooded or deepset eyes? Do most neutrals seem to turn orange on you? If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, then the Kaleidos Venus Trap quad belongs in your collection.
This is the palette I’d hand to someone who says they want their eyes to look done without looking made up. Similarly, it’s the one I’d recommend to anyone who has struggled to find a neutral palette that doesn’t pull orange or golden on them, because Venus Trap is truly cool toned rather than neutral-warm pretending to be cool. On the other hand, skip it if you already own a taupe palette you reach for, if you only wear bright saturated color, or if you avoid talc in your makeup.
What I Loved and What I Did Not
Let me get specific about the Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad. The formula is the star: buttery mattes, a truly buildable glitter, and no wasted pans. Accentuate alone justifies the palette for me. The cool tone is also real, which matters enormously if you’re olive or cool toned and tired of “neutral” palettes that turn warm on you. The price is affordable, the compact travels well, and the color story is cohesive enough that you can’t really go wrong with it.
As for what I did not love, the honest answer is that this color story sits outside my comfort zone. I like loud color, while Venus Trap is deliberately quiet. That’s a me problem rather than a palette problem, but you deserve to know it before you buy. My other nitpick is the same one I had with Twilight Rush: I wish Kaleidos filled these to a full .20 oz so that each shade came in at .05 oz. Finally, I wish that Radiate was not prone to fallout, although a sticky base and finger application help to minimize it.
Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad Review: The Verdict
I sat on this Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad review for a long time because I assumed a subdued cool neutral quad wasn’t for me. I was wrong, and the thing that changed my mind was wearing it. The formula is superb, the cool tone is honest, and Accentuate makes my eyes look brighter than shades three times as saturated. So if you want one small palette that makes your eyes look finished on a day when you have no ideas, this is it.

Is Venus Trap a warm or cool palette?
Cool, and truly cool rather than the “cool neutral” that turns beige on the skin. This is the single most important thing I can tell you about it. Plenty of taupe palettes swing warm the moment they hit the eye, which is a real problem if you’re olive or cool toned. Venus Trap doesn’t do that. Instead, it stays cool on my pale olive skin, which is why it works on me when so many neutral palettes don’t.
Does Venus Trap have fallout?
Yes, in my experience, Radiate is prone to fallout. Using your fingertips, a silicone brush, a sticky primer, or a damp brush will help to minimize the fallout.
Is the Venus Trap quad good for blue, green or hazel eyes?
Yes, and the color wheel explains why. Taupe brown is a desaturated version of orange, and orange sits directly opposite blue. That’s why a cool taupe makes blue and cyan eyes look brighter without shouting. Similarly, the soft cool pink in Base works on green and hazel eyes, since pink is a desaturated red and red sits opposite green. Accentuate, the gunmetal brown, then adds the darkness that defines the whole eye. Brown eyes look wonderful in this quad too, because taupe and gunmetal give depth without competing.
What skin tones and undertones does Venus Trap suit?
Cool and neutral undertones, and I’d add cool olive specifically. I’m porcelain olive, and this palette works with my undertones instead of fighting them. If you’ve found that neutral palettes pull orange or muddy on you, that’s usually a warmth problem rather than a depth problem, and Venus Trap sidesteps it. Not sure where you fall? Does Venus Trap work on hooded or deepset eyes?
Yes. My eyes used to be hooded and they’re now deepset, so I’ve applied eyeshadow both ways. Makeup artists often recommend mattes for hooded eyes, and three of these four shades are mattes that apply easily. First, sweep Diffuse, the light taupe brown, across the whole lid. Then blend Accentuate through the crease and carry it slightly above the crease so it stays visible when your eyes are open. Finally, soften the edges with Base. Do you need a special primer for the Radiate glitter?
No. Radiate is a glitter rather than a duochrome, and it presses down well over any eyeshadow primer I’ve tried it with. If you want maximum chrome, press it on with a damp fingertip or a sticky primer or a silicone finger brush, and build it in layers. You can also spritz your brush with Karla Cosmetics Mist Potion to intensify it. Do you need a primer at all? If you’re applying eyeshadow for deepset or hooded eyes, then yes. Back when my eyes were hooded, my eyeshadow would disappear in 20 minutes or less.
Is the Kaleidos Venus Trap Quad beginner friendly?
Very. All four shades live in the same cool neutral family, so you can’t really make them look muddy, and there’s no bright shade to place wrong. If you’re nervous about eyeshadow, this is about as forgiving as a palette gets. It’s an excellent first quad for beginners.
How does Venus Trap compare to Twilight Rush?
Same formula, same compact, same price, completely different jobs. Twilight Rush is a cool-toned purple palette with a lilac to pink duochrome, and it’s the one I reach for when I want more color. Venus Trap, by contrast, is the cool neutral I reach for when I want my eyes defined without color. Is there a Kaleidos Venus Trap dupe?
Not one that I’ve found, and I’d rather tell you that than send you after something that isn’t a real match. The closest palette in my own collection is the Bellabeautebar Morally Grey palette, and it isn’t a one to one dupe. Morally Grey is built on cool greys, while Venus Trap is built on cool taupes, and that difference matters more than it sounds. Remember the color wheel: taupe is a desaturated orange, so it makes blue and cyan eyes look brighter, while grey sits neutral and gives you smoke and definition instead of contrast. Morally Grey is also nine pans at $42 with multichromes in the mix, so it’s a bigger, pricier palette doing a different job.
Want to know whether you already own something close? Check your stash for two shades: a light cool taupe brown, and a deep gunmetal brown that leans cool rather than warm. If you have both, you can get close to the everyday Venus Trap look. What you’d still be missing is the soft cool pink of Base and the way these four shades were formulated to melt into each other, which is the part I’d have the hardest time recreating from singles.

Yes, and this is the quad I’d pack if I wanted to only take cool-toned neutrals with me. I still like to add Kaleidos Star Surfer to highlight under my brows and at my inner corners with this quad.
