Purple Ombre Hair

Hello beautiful creatures! I wanted to share my new purple ombre hair with you. I went to see my friend Tania at Tampa Hair Extensions for my first cut and color after lockdown on April 25. My last professional hair cut and color with Tania was in October 2020 when she turned me green. Prior to the global pandemic, I preferred to get my hair trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks, but during lockdown I only got one trim. I maintained my color on my own and kept my hair healthy with lots of hair masks.

Purchased by me. All opinions my own.

About Tampa Hair Extensions

Me and Tania

Tampa Hair Extensions is a by appointment only concierge hair service, available in Tampa and Miami. My friend Tania has over 15 years of experience with hair extensions, coloring, cutting and styling. She specializes in fine hair and is a Bellami Professional Hair certified and affiliate stylist. If I get extensions again, I know I will be going to see Tania! You can book a consult with Tania here.

Here’s what my hair looked like before I went to see Tania for a trim. I mostly used Manic Panic Hair Dyes and Lime Crime Color Conditioners to upkeep my color.

And here’s the finished purple ombre hair right after the appointment. Tania had to trim two inches off my length, which was actually less than I anticipated. I thought that because it hadn’t been trimmed in such a long time I might have more split ends. Thankfully, I was able to minimize the split ends by frequent masking.

Tania used Pravana Chromasilk Vivids to create my gorgeous purple color melt. You know how much I love Pravana!

What I’m Using Right Now

Below is what I’m currently using to maintain my hair. Please note, I fully believe that what you eat is reflected in your hair,  skin, and body. I went keto in 2018 and it helped me lose 40 lbs. I’ve since kept off that weight by cutting out most processed foods and radically changing how I eat. I eat an avocado daily, along with blueberries and macadamia nuts. In addition to shopping at my local grocer, I shop at Butcher Box for healthy lean protein and Thrive Market for additional healthy foods.

  • Manuka Honey Serborrheic Dermatitis Shampoo – new shampoo to try to help my scalp. I wash every 5 to 7 days.
  • Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock – I use this as my conditioner and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes when I wash my hair. This is the main thing that has helped to save my hair.
  • Aunt Jackie’s Fix My hair Intensive Repair Conditioning Masque – I use this once a month as a mask for about an hour.
  • Lime Crime Color Conditioner – I sometimes use the blue or purple to help maintain my color. I put this on as a hair mask and leave it on for 1 to 2 hours.
  • Manic Panic Hair Dyes – I often use these to maintain my color. I put this on with a cap and leave it on for 1 to 2 hours.
  • Pravana Chromasilk Vivids Dyes – I love to mix these with Manic Panic to get the exact shade I’m looking for with longer lasting results.
  • Drybar Dry Shampoo – what I use after workouts and in between washing my hair.
  • Drybar Dry Conditioner –  what I use in between washing my hair.
  • Eva NYC Mane Magic 10-in-1 Primer – what I use after I get out of the shower and before I blow dry or air dry.
  • Paul Mitchell Neuro Thermal Protection Spray – what I use before I heat style.
  • Hair Waver – What Mickey used on me and recommended, so I bought one and use it to put waves in my hair. Love it!

Dave and Phyrra in front of rainbow wings

Hello beautiful creatures! It’s been a while so I thought I’d share a personal life update with you. I’ve had so many different things happening lately in my life.

First up, life after being fully vaccinated against COVID has been great. Dave and I have been slowly reintigrating back into the world after being half-feral at home. We’ve started by attending outdoor events with friends and practicing social distancing. I’ve seen friends in small groups indoors.

I’ve now been inside a restaurant and eaten a meal with friends indoors, though I still prefer to do curbside pickup or delivery. Not gonna lie, I preferred delivery prior to the pandemic, because I love the comfort of my own home or my friends’ homes. And I finally set foot inside an Ulta recently because I placed an online order for in-store pickup.

When I go somewhere indoors, I wear a mask. I’ve been wearing these purple masks that my friend Erin shared with me or other masks handmade by friends.

Mickey’s Birthday Party

Mickey's Surprise Party

The first ‘big’ life update event I attended was a surprise birthday party for Mickey that Nattie and Jenni threw. We had a fabulous time! Being able to see friends and hug them has been the best!

Iron Anik Games

The next big life update event that I attended post-COVID was the Iron Anik. Iron Life Athelets and the Foundation for Scottish Atletics joined forces to raise awareness for brain cancer and help cover medical expenses for Aniks Pepin, an athlete who is battling brain cancer. This event mixed classic Highland Games strength events with Strongman competition events. My friend Tania competes in the Strongman community and invited us to attend. We had such a fabulous time I didn’t even remember to pull out my camera to snap photos. However, you can see a video of a border collie adopting me at the event!

Sky Diving

Phyrra and Tania together in a photo
Me with Tania
Phyrra and Carlye smiling

Tania and Dave after they skydived

Yesterday, Dave and Tania went skydiving for the first time. While I seriously thought about jumping out of the plane with them, I couldn’t quite convince myself to do it, though I’ve been planning to go indoor skydiving for several months. I watched the two of them jump and they thought it was a lot of fun. Carlye came and hung out with us while Dave and Tania waited to skydive.

Work

I wanted to share a work life update too. While I really enjoyed my new job that I started in January, it was quite draining with the constant video meetings. This position helped me with my self-confidence, which I needed. Recently my bestie Jessie offered me a position within her company as her assistant and I accepted. I will be starting a new job with her soon and I’m really looking forward to it.

Divorce

I have yet another divorce life update to share. It is such a painful experience to go through. I’m still in the throes of my divorce, but hoping it will be over with in the next few months.

Other Tidbits

I’m currently working on having my blog updated and redesigned for 2021, since this year is my 13th blogaversary. This blog became a thing in May 2008. The new mobile design is so much easier to navigate that I cannot wait for it to be live! My friend Jamie is doing a great job on the redesign.

I’m still struggling with my PMDD. My next step is to see a reproductive psychiatrist and see if she can help. I’m also trying to get in to see a gyn who specializes in PMDD. However, these doctors are booked out months in advance and it’s hard to not feel frustrated with my situation.

I’ve been dealing with online harassment, which has not been fun. It’s seriously made me think about shutting down my blog and getting rid of all my social media profiles. While I love blogging, I do not love to be harassed. If I set a boundary, I expect it to be respected. If it’s not respected, I cut people out of my life. Remember, you do not owe anyone else closure. You do not need to toxic people in your life. You can cut them out. In case you missed it, here’s why I don’t talk to my toxic mother.

Below are some mental health articles you might enjoy.

Upcoming Reviews

Now for a makeup life update. I have so much makeup on deck to be reviewed, but my problem has been finding the time to do it. During the week I haven’t had time, but I’m hopeful that I will with my new job. And I’ve been filling my weekends with seeing my friends face to face, whom I’ve missed terribly. Below is what you can expect to see from me in the next few weeks.

So there’s my personal life update. This is what has been going on with me. What’s been going on with you?

Best Gothic Makeup Brands to Try in 2021

Hello beautiful creatures! I’m back with my best gothic makeup brands to try in 2021 video. Every brand on my list is cruelty-free, most offer vegan options, and most are indie beauty brands. These are my favorite makeup brands. I’ve included top reviews and tutorials featuring these goth makeup brands in this post.

Best Gothic Makeup Brands

1. Necromancy Cosmetica

Necromancy Cosmetica is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from Puerto Rico. They make amazing bullet lipsticks and just recently released their A Gothic Romance palette. Mine just arrived so I will be reviewing it soon. It is beautiful! Their gothic packaging is awesome. I seriously cannot wait to get my review up on their new palette, which is sure to become a best gothic makeup staple in my collection.

2. Baby Bat Beauty

Baby Bat Beauty  is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They created the Nox palette, which is an awesome red vampire themed palette. BBB also have a giant magnetic palette with a creepy cute double headed bat for you to put all your indie singles into. Speaking of singles, Baby Bat Beauty makes beautiful duochromes and multichrome eyeshadows. They also make lip colors, as well as other face and body products.

3. Glam Goth Beauty

Glam Goth Beauty is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from California. They make beautiful glitters, a great sticky base primer called Diamond Primer, liquid lipsticks and more. My favorite product by them is Diamond Primer. I just ordered their Seven Deadly Sins palette and will be reviewing it. They have great black packaging.

4. Lethal Cosmetics

Lethal Cosmetics is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from Berlin, Germany.  They make stunning eyeshadows, blushes, highlighters, bronzers, gel liners, lipsticks, glosses, and liquid eyeshadows. Lethal basically do it all, making them one of my top picks for the best gothic makeup! My favorite products by them are their single eyeshadows. I love their sleek black packaging. Lethal is a brand to keep an eye on, as they keep releasing lots of great new products.

5. Lunatick Cosmetic Labs

Lunatick Cosmetic Labs is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from Wisconsin. They have a ton of gothic themed palettes from eyeshadow palettes to contour palettes for light and deep skin tones. Lunatick Labs also make lipsticks and lip slicks. You will love their gothic makeup packaging, which is always fabulous and the biggest reason I consider them one of the best gothic makeup brands.

6. Black Moon Cosmetics

Black Moon Cosmetics is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from California. They make amazing liquid lipsticks, highlighters, lipsticks, liquid eyeshadows, and eyeshadow palettes. While I love my eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks from them dearly, their highlighters are my all-time favorites! Catshark is an amazing iridescent purple moonlighter. Sleepwalker is the best black liquid lipstick. I love so many of their liquid lipsticks including Sorrow, Murmaider, Sanguis, DeVille, and Haunting. And the Full Moon palette is an excellent staple neutral palette.  Black Moon has great gothic packaging. I love everything about Black Moon Cosmetics! They’re one of the best gothic makeup brands ever.

7. My Pretty Zombie

My Pretty Zombie is 100% cruelty-free, mostly vegan indie beauty brand from California. They make awesome duochrome eyeshadows and blushes, as well as some lip and nail products. Their packaging is nice, clear jars. MPZ product names are often gothic inspired. You will receive either a toy severed limb or a cat with your orders, last I checked.

8. Rituel de Fille

Rituel de Fille is a 100% cruelty-free indie beauty brand from California. They specialize in cream products and they make beautiful blushes, highlighters, eye soots and lipsticks. On my oily hooded eyelids I really struggle to make any of their gelee formulas work. Hooded eyes + glossy lids are just a mess on me. However, their inner glow pigments for the cheeks are amazing. My favorite product by them is Nymph, a blood red cheek color. Their packaging is on point, black, sleek and has a witchy feel with the stars. RdF’s focus is unique since they only make cream products and they make them well, making them one of the best gothic makeup brands to try in 2021. It’s easier to find them now that they’re at Ulta, and you can even use your Ulta points to purchase products!

9. Concrete Minerals

Concrete Minerals is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from California. They make eyeshadows and lipsticks. CM recently released their own versions of multichromes as well. They currently offer clear packaging with a witchy feel.

10. Fyrinnae

Fyrinnae is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand from the Pacific Northwest. I love Fyrinnae dearly! They make amazing eyeshadows in both loose and pressed formats, eco friendly glitter, lip colors and other makeup products, as well as perfume. Fyrinnae’s packaging is very simple, but the colors are otherworldly. Northwest Night and Alpenglow are two of my favorite eyeshadows by them. They also make perfumes. Fyrinnae constantly raises the bar on making great products, like having eco friendly glitter. This is one of the things that makes them one of the best gothic makeup brands to me.

11. Melt Cosmetics

Melt Cosmetics is a 100% cruelty-free indie beauty brand with vegan offerings. They make so many great products – lip pencils, lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, blushes, cream blushes, eyeliners, gel eyeliners, eyeshadow palettes, eyeshadow stacks, highlighters etc. Their packaging is usually awesome. I love their unique thin palettes. I’m hard pressed to pick a favorite, so I’ll say that their Radioactive, Smoke Sessions, and Muerte palettes are among my favorites. Radioactive is great for my bright and neon looks. From the Smoke Sessions palette I’m literally obsessed with Space Queen, this beautiful cool-toned green matte. Muerte has so many beautiful cool tones in it, too. Melt is one of the biggest and best gothic makeup brands you can easily pop into a Sephora to pick up.

12. Devinah Cosmetics

Devinah Cosmetics is a 100% cruelty-free indie brand with some vegan offerings. They make tons of beautiful multichrome and duochrome eyeshadows, highlighters and bronzers. My favorite eyeshadows from them are a set of duochromes that were limited edition, but I recommend any of their multichromes. So good! Their packaging is usually black and sleek.

13. Terra Moon Cosmetics

Terra Moon Cosmetics is a 100% cruelty-free and mostly vegan indie beauty brand. They make stunning multichromes, duochromes, and other eyeshadows. I love every single one of the multichromes I’ve purchased from them. Their pre-orders ship out faster than Clionadh, too. I love Antares, Moon Tide, UFO, Daybreak, Counting Stars, Cinnamon Sugar and Zero Gravity.

14. Sugarpill

Sugarpill is a 100% cruelty-free mostly vegan indie beauty brand. They make beautiful eyeshadows and lipsticks. Specifically I want to call out their C3 Palette, with the black packaging and muted colors. They’ve been a staple in the alternative makeup scene for a long time, which makes them one of the best gothic makeup brands to me.

15. Manic Panic

Manic Panic is a 100% cruelty-free 100% vegan indie beauty brand. They’re the OG best gothic makeup brand and they’ve been around about as long as I’ve been alive. MP make foundations, lipsticks, nail polish, glow in the dark glitter, eyeshadow, liner, and hair dye. My favorite product by them is their hair dye.

16. Lime Crime

Lime Crime is 100% cruelty-free and 100% vegan. They are not indie. In case you didn’t know, Doe Deere is no longer associated with Lime Crime and stepped off the board of the company. I’m including Lime Crime in this list because of their Venus Immortalis gothic eyeshadow palette, which I adore. In general, I really love their eyeshadow formula and find it works well on my hooded eyes. They also make lipsticks, blushes, glosses and more. Lime Crime makes hair dye but I would avoid that based on a vast multitude of non-favorable reviews. My favorite product by them is their Plushies liquid lipstick formula. I really wish they would release a Plushies Glow collection.

17. KVD Vegan Beauty

KVD Vegan Beauty is 100% cruelty-free and 100% vegan. They are not indie. Now that Kat von Disease is out of the company, I’m comfortable buying from them again. I recently purchased their new Good Apple Foundation Balm, but unfortunately it didn’t work on my 42 year old dry skin. They make several different types of foundations, lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, blushes, eyeshadows and more. My current favorite product by them is their blushes, I have Honeysuckle and Rosebud.

Final Thoughts

The Best Gothic Makeup Brands of 2021

As I state in my video, goth is a music subculture. If you love gothic music, you can be goth. Goth is not white, nor is it tied to a specific fashion brand, such as Killstar. You don’t have to listen to ONLY goth music to be goth, nor do you have to dress goth to be goth. I’ve always felt like being goth gives me freedom of expression and lets me embrace my own unique beauty. It has helped me to become comfortable in my own skin. It’s helped me to stand up for what I believe in. Goth and punk music have helped to shape my political views.

Best Gothic Hair Dye Brands

Hello beautiful people! Today’s video is a recently requested Best Gothic Hair Dye Brands. I talk about my favorite brands and my personal experience with each one as well as share past hair colors of mine. I talk about how I maintain my color with hair dye at home, what worked for me and what hasn’t worked as well. If you’re looking for the PERFECT shade of black with blue or purple undertones, I mention several, too.

How I Currently Maintain My Hair

DIY How I Maintain My Hair at Home

Right now I use either Lime Crime Hair Conditioner or Manic Panic to maintain my hair color in between salon visits. I purchased the Lime Crime when it was on sale for around $11, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. It does a decent job, but I still prefer Manic Panic!

Prior to 2020, I was a person who went to the salon every 6 weeks for a trim. I would get professional color done whenever I felt it necessary but spent a lot of time maintaining at home in between visits. Because of 2020 being what it is, I had to stop going to see Cliff at iStyle (who is amazing and I adore) and have went once to my friend Tania’s salon, House of Stylists. See why here. They are both insanely talented stylists, they’re both amazing with hair extensions and curly hair, which can be tricky to find.

Top 5 Favorite Hair Masks

  1. Neuma neuMoisture Intensive Masque
  2. IGK Antisocial Overnight Bond Building Dry Hair Mask
  3. Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock
  4. Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector
  5. Amika Soul Food Nourishing Hair Mask

I love to put my hair in loose braids after spraying on my IGK Antisocial Overnight Bond Building Dry Hair Mask. I use Neuma neuMoisture Intensive Masque twice a month for deep moisture. I use Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock every other time I wash my hair. I use Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector after I bleach or lighten my hair, or if I’ve done excessive heat styling. Until I got hooked on Neuma, I was using Amika Soul Food Nourishing Hair Mask twice a month. Both are great!

How to Make Hair Color Last Longer

If you’re looking to make your hair color last longer, there are several things I recommend doing. First, unless you have very oily hair, I do not recommend washing your hair every day. I wash my hair every 5 to 7 days and use dry shampoo in between if I need it. Second, use color safe shampoos and conditioners. Third, don’t heat style your hair every day. Heat will fade your color.

I also see great success using Pravana Chromasilk Vivids as my ‘base’ when DIY’ing my color at home. If I primarily use Pravana dye and then adjust the hue with Manic Panic to get it to the right shade that I want, I end up with longer lasting results than if I just use Manic Panic on its own.

Melt MaryJane Palette

Hello beautiful creatures! Today I wanted to share my Melt MaryJane Palette Swatches with you. I purchased the MaryJane Collection when it was on sale last week and received it on Monday. Melt ships super fast! I have not had a chance to wear MaryJane yet, unfortunately. I received my second COVID vaccination this past Saturday. The second shot was hard on me, but I am so glad to have it done! Please get your vaccines as soon as you can so that more people are protected!

In case you are new to Melt Cosmetics, they are a cruelty-free indie brand that is also Leaping Bunny Certified. Melt’s website says that MaryJane is 100% vegan.

While I loved the crystal, raised up design for the name on the packaging, I definitely agree with my friends in the PhyrraNyx Facebook Group that the font is hard to read. It doesn’t clearly say Mary Jane. I do like the design overall otherwise. And it is a very long, narrow palette, just like my other Melt palettes.

Shades

MaryJane Palette Shades
Indoors under artificial light

Now, when I saw the promo photos and video for this palette I thought it was going to be a tighter, better edit of the Natasha Denona Glam Palette. I thought it had cool-toned shades. I was wrong. However, I don’t think I mind the color scheme. It’s just not what I was expecting and I’m really looking forward to when I have time to play with MaryJane. Several people have suggested this palette might look amazing on olive skin tones.

  • Mary Jane – Wash this sheer bud crystal shade all over the lid or pop it in the inner corner for high-impact shine.
  • Gaspar – This jasper matte eyeshadow is easy to wear in the crease or as a wash of color and adds a subtle hit of olive.
  • Sweet Lucy – A deliciously seductive metallic shadow with a deep charcoal base and pyrite hued pearl. Apply this shade all over the lid for a smoldering smoked eye.
  • Bamba- Dense graphite metallic eyeshadow with a true neutral tone. Wet your brush for a chrome effect.
  • Sinsemilla – Smooth deep brown matte with a cool undertone. Smudge this eye shadow into the lash line and outer corner to deepen and define your smoked eye.
  • Santa Maria – Black diamond shadow. Opaque and dynamic, she can be applied with a finger or a brush for a dense gunmetal eye look.
  • Rubia – She’s our neutral crease shade of this palette. Blend this ash blonde matte shadow in the crease for a seamless gradient.
  • Bo – Wash this effortlessly elegant smoky quartz eyeshadow all over the lid for a simple, yet refined eye look.
  • Mari – Hold it together. This natural hemp paper hued eyeshadow is here to blend away any harsh lines.
  • Kali – Add this sheer crushed diamond toned shadow to the center of the lid for an energetic luster.

About My Skin Tone

I have very fair neutral to cool yellow undertones. Current best matches include Milk Makeup Flex Stick Foundation in Porcelain, Urban Decay Hydromaniac Tinted Glow Hydrator in 10 Ultra-Fair Neutral, Supergoop! CC Screen SPF 50 in 105N, Nyx Born to Glow! Naturally Radiant Foundation in Pale, and Juvia’s Place 3-in-1 Shade Stick Foundation in Tokyo.

Bold Pink Makeup Look

Hello my friends. It has been a hot minute since I created a fun makeup look, so today I’m sharing a bold pink makeup look I put together. Pink is my friend Nattie’s favorite color, so I was thinking it might be fun to create a bold look in her signature hue. I’ve had people tell me that no one should wear bright pink eyeshadow, especially not ‘old’ people like me who are over 40, or who have hooded eyes like mine. Clearly, I don’t care what they say!

Marc Jacobs Berry Deep Liquid Liner – upper lash line

* PR sample.

When creating this look, I applied UD Eden Primer Potion as my base and set the crease with my Cozzette Powder in C1. With a Sigma E25 I applied Nabla Venom to the lid and crease and used a pencil brush to apply it to 3/4 of the outer lower lid. I applied a tiny bit of UD Hexed to the inner lower lid. Lethal Remission was the perfect transition shade for this look, so I used that to blend out the edges of Venom. I went over the edges of everything with Cozzette C1 (a skin tone shade powder) to make sure it blended nicely. I used a small brush to smudge Nabla #3 Cupid’s Arrow along the upper and lower lash line and into a wing shape. I lined the upper lash line with Marc Jacobs Berry Deep liquid liner. I wasn’t going to apply mascara because I haven’t had a lash lift in almost a year and a half and my lashes refuse to hold a curl, but I tried curling them anyways and then put on Eyeko Lash Alert Mascara.

I lined and filled in my lips with Melt Jinx lip pencil. It’s the perfect bright fuchsia pink. I topped it with Lime Crime Fruitcake Plushie Glow (LE).

I LOVE the Lime Crime Plushie Glow formula and hate that Lime Crime has only ever released LE versions of it. It’s one of the most comfortable liquid lipstick formulas I’ve ever tried and it doesn’t transfer. Lime Crime, if you’re reading this, please release an entire line of Plushie Glows in fun colors.

For my face I applied Danessa Myricks Original Prism FX Hydrating Lotion as my primer. I mixed in a bit of Prism FX with Urban Decay Hydromaniac in 10 Ultra Fair Neutral for my foundation. I felt nostalgic for Urban Decay’s Afterglow Blush formula and used Angel as a highlighting blush and Easy as my blush from the Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani blush palette. I even dusted a bit of Easy blush across my nose. I then went and added a bit more glow with Black Moon Centipede. I applied the thinnest application possible of Laura Mercier Undereye Setting Powder under my eyes. I took a tiny amount of Cozzette C1 powder and dusted it over my blush and highlight to make sure that they blended nicely. Then I set my makeup with UD’s All Nighter Spray.

Urban Decay Hydromaniac Tinted Glow Hydrator Foundation is the best foundation for my dry skin that UD has released in over a decade. It matches me without me having to add a white mixer. I love the glow it gives. In love with it!

Bold Pink Makeup Look

Bold Pink Makeup Look

UD’s Easy Afterglow blush was perfect for giving me a soft pink glow to compliment my bold pink makeup look. I really miss the Urban Decay Afterglow Blush formula. I wish they had done more with it, like added more cool-toned shades and kept it around longer. I think it was a wonderful formula and I loved both the blush palettes I purchased in it. The UD x Gwen Stefani blush palette is so pretty on me, in my opinion. The UD x Jean-Michel Basquiat blush quad was a stunner too.

I finally received my Terra Moon Cosmetics order that contained Antares and knew I wanted to use it in a look. Antares has a coral pink base and it shifts to green and gold. The green shift is much easier to see in person and the camera loves to pick up the gold shift. Nabla’s Venon provided the perfect deep fuchsia pink base and using Lethal Remission to blend out its edges really complimented Antares.

I hope you are doing well! If you want to chat with me, join me in the PhyrraNyx Facebook Group. I pop in there daily to say hi, comment on people’s makeup looks, and talk about beauty, gothic fashion, mental health, and other lifestyle topics.

6 Easy Tips and Tricks for Looking Better in Photos: iPhone 12 Pro Max Edition

Hello Hex Squad! Today’s post is a guest feature from my friend Ashley at the Blog Frog. Since I just bought my second iPhone, an iPhone 12 Pro Max and am still getting used to how the iPhone works, we thought it might be fun to share some photo tips.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max

iPhone 12 Pro Max with Bat Case

I purchased the iPhone 12 Pro Max 256GB Silver unlocked, so I can use it with any carrier. I’m currently trying to decide between Mint Mobile and Google Fi for my new carrier. I’ve been using T-Mobile for over 15 years, but am tired of paying their rates. I am in LOVE with my new Casetify Bats with Rainbow Unicorn Pastel Glitter. I also purchased a few Velvet Caviar cases (Glitter Nebula, Black Marble Holo, and Moonstone Marble Holo cases) that are pretty, but I don’t love them as much as I love this bat case. I ordered the custom Poison Apple pop socket from an Etsy seller in Black & Green glitter.

You may also want to check out this video from my friend Sarah Zerafa on posing. My bestie Carlye also does a lot of great posing on her Instagram.

6 Easy Tips and Tricks for Looking Better in Photos

6 Easy Tips and Tricks for Looking Better in Photos: iPhone 12 Pro Max Edition

Pictures are the best. They let you speak volumes in a single post, show off your new favorite item, and share fun times and cherished memories with the world.

However, there’s an unfortunate flip side. Most of us find ourselves disappointed with our reflections in the camera.

Luckily, being picture-perfect every time is all about technique, and anybody can learn it. So, if you’ve just purchased your iPhone 12 Pro Max – a smartphone praised for its camera quality – let’s ensure you make the most out of it.

Be Real With Yourself

There are essential grounds to cover before unboxing your new shiny iPhone 12 Pro Max and testing its state-of-the-art camera. The first step towards taking better pictures is understanding what made you dislike your previous attempts.

You can only do this by taking a long hard look at your existing photos. Ideally, you’ll take similar shots, one you like and the other that makes you want to hide in your bed.

Compare the two. Is the angle different? Do you smile with your teeth in one and not in the other? What are you doing with your hands? All these answers inform your future successful poses.

Some easy tips include:

  • If you often blink in photos, close your eyes before the camera clicks and open them slowly.
  • Push your head forward to avoid the double chin.
  • Press your tongue against the backs of your teeth to avoid broad, goofy smiles.

In reality, there are easy fixes to whatever you might dislike about photo representations of yourself. Once you determine the main culprits for subpar pics, it’s time to see what your new iPhone can do for you.

The All-Powerful iPhone

iphone 12 pro max camera

Apple’s latest phone editions are all about high-quality photos. The iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with three rear cameras, light detection and ranging sensors, and various shot widths to support any artistic endeavor.

The quality is impressive. Wide and telephoto lenses feature dual-optical stabilization to eliminate shaky takes, while the sensor-shifts in the Pro Max Edition take it one step further.

There’s a lot to say about this, but we’re here to discuss how YOU can look your best in photos. So, let’s examine the features central to that purpose.

Portrait Mode

iPhone 12 Pro Max

The portrait mode helps you take studio-quality photos with your iPhone 12 Pro Max every time. It keeps the subject in the foreground and gives a soft focus to the background.

You’ll find several settings to adjust the flash, night mode, or HDR in combination with this mode. You can also alter the depth of field and determine how blurry you want the background to be.

Night Mode

Night Mode on iPhone 12 Pro Max

This mode is your go-to for keeping your shots stunning even in low-light conditions.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max activates it automatically as soon as it notices a lack of lighting, extending the shutter for several seconds longer than the regular camera. As a result, the lens brings in the right amount of light and produces a better image.

Check the number next to the moon icon to see how long the phone must stay in place. Play around with exposure lengths, setting it to as high as 30 seconds for dreamy twilight shots.

HDR Shots

Beautiful Woman Outdoors posing

HDR stands for high dynamic range, enabling the phone to take several shots at once and blend them to bring out all the best features. All you need to do is keep the iPhone 12 Pro Max steady around two seconds before and after the snap.

This one is excellent for showing your best photo self on high-quality shots during the daytime.

Six Top Tips

You already know what you don’t like about your past pics and how to use your new device to improve them. Let’s go through some practical tips to make every next photo shoot a breeze.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Return to the ‘do and don’t’ list and head to the mirror to practice. You could even put your brand-new camera to the test during this stage.

Try out different angles and poses you liked in the previous photos. Get a good feel for the poses that flatter you most, and you’ll be able to recreate them naturally the next time somebody takes out a camera.

Once you master the basics, start playing around with variations. Let loose within the confines of what works to enjoy yourself.

Lighting is Everything

Backlit woman indoors

The night mode is there to assist you with unexpected evening photoshoots on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but you’re in charge most of the time.

Natural, outdoor lighting is your best bet. A bright and sunny day makes you seem happy and glowing, but overcast conditions are ideal to avoid awkward shadows and squinting.

If you’re indoors, don’t stand directly under a light, but face the source. That way, it’ll fall across your figure, not creating any cringe-worthy shadows or creases.

Bonus tip: Red eye often happens in low ambient light. Look directly at a bright light source to shrink your pupils and avoid this embarrassing, early 2000’s moment.

Edit Away

You’re already going through all this trouble to look your most stunning in a pic – why not choose an app for selfie editing to make the best one?

Don’t go overboard and make yourself unrecognizable. Still, retouching the photo to modify problem areas is a sure way to be pleased about each shot.

Plus, these apps are fun. Even if you’re 100% satisfied with your iPhone 12 Pro Max photo looks, filters can make your pic pop against any feed.

Dress the Part

Consider what looks good on your body and makes you feel comfortable before a photoshoot. Choose shapes and silhouettes that match your body type and colors that suit your skin tone.

Heavy patterns and loud colors take the attention away from your face, so only choose such clothes if they’re what best represents your personality.

Bonus tip: If you’re worried about the length of your legs, go for high-waisted bottoms and platforms to elongate your body.

Make Your Makeup Pop

Best Purples Makeup Tutorial
See my best purples makeup tutorial

If you want stunning closeups, take some extra time to ensure you don’t look caked or flaky under the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera lens. For example:

  • Full mattifying coverage for smooth, shine-free skin
  • T-zone powder to remove shine
  • Bronzers and blush for contouring the face
  • Highlighter on the inner eye to open it up
  • Eyeliner and lashes to define the eyes
  • Bright, natural lipstick for luscious lips

However, if you like dark lipstick and shimmering powders like I know Phyrra does – go for it. These are merely some general pointers that work for most people.

Go For Props

Gorgeous woman outdoors

Nobody knows what to do with their arms in pictures. So, experiment with props to eliminate the awkwardness and give yourself something to do.

If you’re not a big fan of flowers, drinks, or sunglasses in your hands, touch your hair. It makes the shot look natural, breezy, and candid. Plus, you get bonus points for accentuating your figure by raising your arms.

Get Comfortable!

Finally, remember to enjoy it. Taking pictures with the iPhone 12 Pro Max should be fun. After all, if it’s not, why even do it?

Use these tips and practice until you’re comfortable with the process. You’ll be posting bomb pics across your social media accounts in no time.

KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm Review

Hello beautiful creatures! Today I’m bringing you my KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm Review. I recently purchased this cream compact foundation from the KVD website before it sold out everywhere. As you know, I’m a huge fan of cream stick products. But is the Good Apple Foundation Balm worth the hype?

About KVD Beauty

KVD Beauty used to be a cruelty-free brand owned by Kat Von D and Kendo. Kat Von D has since been removed from the brand. (yay!) The brand now claims to be tattoo-inspired vegan beauty. On their site they state, Tattoos are the boldest form of artistic self-expression. We reject conventional beauty standards and sameness. They accept the beauty of our uniqueness and flaws. We give a fuck about the world. Kara Veritas Decora = Value Truth Beauty. They are 100% cruelty-free and 100% vegan, as well as being committed to becoming more sustainable and working to create fully recyclable packaging. The newest face of KVD is Miryam Lumpini, an absolutely stunning tattoo artist!

If you love tattoos like I do, check out my tattoos! I can’t wait to be fully vaccinated against COVID. One of the many things on my to-do list is to get a new tattoo!

About My Skin Type and Tone

I’m 42 years old. My skin tone is a very fair neutral to cool yellow.  It’s dry, sensitive and I have rosacea, along with a bit of texture, a bit of hyperpigmentation, and a touch of serbhorreic dermatitis between my brows. My biggest skin concerns are anti-aging, fine lines, dryness, and sensitivity. Because of my skin type, a foundation like the KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm sounds ideal.

KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm Swatches

Good Apple Balm Swatches of Deep 084, Tan 066, Medium 027, Light 10, Light 002

When I purchased my KVD Good Apple Balm I also ordered the blister pack with extra shades. I swatched Deep 084, Tan 066, Medium 027, and Light 10 along with my Light 002. If I were the person designing sample packs of shades, I would include the darkest shade, the lightest shade, and 2 or 3 of the typically most popular in between shades.

KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm Light Skin Swatches KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm Pale Skin Swatches

I included swatches of the KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 against some of my other very fair to cool yellow foundations. I also included a gifted product that is not cruelty-free since people often ask me for a MAC comparison.

  • Nyx Born to Glow! Naturally Radiant Foundation in Pale (v)
  • Juvia’s Place 3-in-1 Shade Stick Foundation in Tokyo (v)
  • MAC Studio Fix Soft Matte Foundation Stick in NW13 (not cruelty-free, was gifted to me for comparisons)
  • Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Skin Finish Buildable Coverage Foundation Stick in Angel Food (cruelty-free, fragrance-free)
  • Milk Makeup Flex Stick Foundation in Porcelain (v)
  • KVD Beauty Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 (v)
  • The KVD True Portrait Medium Coverage Shake Foundation in Light 002 (v) (I’m suspecting this may be discontinued, but I’m not 100% sure on that)

KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm on Me

Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 Day 1 Wear Test

Here’s what it looked like on me when I wore it without primer for the first wear test. I did set it with the KVD Lock-It Finishing Powder in Fair. It did not last for me. Good Apple Balm broke down on my nose and cheeks. It also looked like it was sitting on top of my skin as opposed to melding with my skin. The photo above was taken in natural morning light around 8:30 am next to a window.

Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 Day 2 Wear Test

On day two, wearing the KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 on top of Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer and set with Cozzette Beauty Essential Powder in C1. The day two photos were taken in front of my window with lots of natural light plus my ring light on a low setting.

KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 Blends Seamlessly Initially

You can see in the photo above that the KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 shade match is excellent and blends in seamlessly with my skin tone, in my opinion.

What I love about this product

I love the clear packaging that is recyclable, which is great for the environment. It is fantastic that the balm comes in around 40 shades, including matches for very fair skin like mine or very deep skin tones. I love the initial finish of the foundation, which looks very much like a natural or satin matte finish.

What I don’t love about this product

I don’t love how this wears on me. It is not long-wearing in my experience, as I can’t get it to last from 8:30 am to 5 pm. I don’t like how it emphasizes pores, looks strangely shiny, and sometimes appears to be sitting on top of my skin instead of melding seamlessly with it.

KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm Review

Is Good Apple Worth the Hype?

I am a huge fan of cream stick products, but I find cream compact products to be hit or miss. The Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation in N0 performs well on my skin. Rituel de Fille the Ethereal Veil in Nix sometimes looks great on me and other times looks a bit odd, so I find it often works best as a concealer for me. I wanted to love the KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 but it just did not perform well for me and I couldn’t get it to last through a work day.

So, is the KVD Good Apple Foundation Balm worth the hype? In my humble opinion, no. Not unless I can find some way to make it work for dry skin like mine.

If you have extremely dry skin, much dryer than my dry skin, this might be the foundation for you. Skin younger than mine might find this foundation amazing. Sadly, the KVD Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Foundation Balm in Light 002 just isn’t a winner for me right now. If you have suggestions on other ways for me to apply this foundation to get it to last at least through my work day and have it look great, I would love to hear them!

KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection

Hello beautiful creatures! Today I’m sharing some of the jewels from the KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection. This collection launched at the end of February 2021. Thank you so much to KBShimmer for sending me the nail polishes that I’m featuring today. KBShimmer nail polishes ranges in price from $10 for cremes to $11 for other formulas. They are one of the most affordable nail polish brands out there and they make some of the most unique polish I’ve ever found.

Where to Buy
Amazon, KBShimmer, Etsy

About KBShimmer

For those of who you don’t know, KBShimmer is a 100% cruelty-free, 100% vegan indie beauty brand. They make some of the most beautiful multichromes in existance! KBShimmer also makes wonderful bath and body products. I use their Pink Sugar Body Lotion, I swear by their tri-level cuticle oil, and Dave is now hopelessly addicted to their matte cuticle balm.

Enchanted Forest Collection

The KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection is made up of 9 polishes. Frequent Flyer, a white-based multichrome that has all the hues of the rainbow. Amanita Moment, a green crelly with color shifting flakies. Mist Me, a slate blue with rose gold hues. Dawn to Earth, paying homage to the sun with a cobalt blue base and pink shimmer. Hidden Potential is a warm violet with golden green shift. No Illusions is a stunning multichrome that shifts from teal to emerald to purple and magenta. Branching Out is a tri-thermal that ranges from navy to dusty periwinkle to mint. I’d Pick You is a pastel orchid crelly with color changing flakies. What the Fudge is a milk chocolate creme polish.

In addition to showing you my favorites from the Enchanted Forest collection today, I’m also featuring Obsidian and White Here White Now.

Dawn to Earth

The top photo of Dawn to Earth was taken outdoors, while the bottom photo was taken indoors. Dawn to Earth is a gorgeous bright cobalt blue jelly. It has a strong pink shift that hits hues of rose, fuschia, peach and gold.

Frequent Flyer

The two photos below of KBShimmer Frequent Flyer were taken outdoors in sunlight. above the photos were taken indoors in natural light next to a window.

KBShimmer Frequent Flyer

For the 3 nails on the left above I used 1 layer of KBShimmer White Here White Now as a base and two coats of Frequent Flyer. For the 1 nail to the right I used 3 coats of Frequent Flyer. The difference I noticed between the two is that without a white base Frequent Flyer leans more pink. With the white base, the pastel tones really pop!

KBShimmer Frequent Flyer nail polish swatch

KBShimmer describes Frequent Flyer as shimmering shades of golden champagne that shift to spring green. You’ll see tones of aqua, blue, peach, rose, and violet. Worn on its own or layered over a white or neutral base the pastel rainbow hues come to life. On top of black you will see jewel rainbow tones of gold, green and aqua.

I love how Frequent Flyer looks on top of White Here White Now when paired with a stiletto nail shape. So pretty!

No Illusions

KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection No Illusions

The above photos of No Illusions were taken outdoors except for the bottom photo, which was taken indoors next to indirect sunlight. I love that last photo so much! No Illusions is a jaw dropping multichrome. Starting as a bright teal that shifts into emerald with hints of blue, it quickly morphs into grape and magenta purples. No Illusions is absolutely one of the shiftiest multichromes I’ve ever seen.

Obsidian

KBShimmer Obsidian Black Red Multichrome

For the photo above, Obsidian was photographed outside. Below, Obsidian is shown indoors next to natural light by a window.

KBShimmer Obsidian swatch

Obsidian is not part of the KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection, but I wanted to make sure you saw this color if you’re a fan of multichromes and you like darker colors. Obsidian is a black multichrome that shifts to shades of umber, crimson, orange and gold. It is so stunning!

KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection Final Thoughts

Frequent Flyer and No Illusions are my absolute favorites from the KBShimmer Enchanted Forest Collection. I can’t choose between them! If you only want to pick up 1 or 2, they are my top recommendations. They’re too beautiful!

If you love thermal nail polish, I recommend the shade Branching Out, as it is a beautiful navy to aqua. I’ve still got my eye on Hidden Potential, as I may pick that one up!
