Cruelty-Free Makeup Brands List

Last Updated January 13, 2021

Welcome to my Cruelty-Free Makeup Brands List 2021! I choose to support cruelty-free brands even if they have a parent company that is not cruelty free. I believe that supporting animal-friendly companies goes a long way toward the eventual elimination of animal testing. If a brand is not cruelty free but decides to go cruelty free, I will support them! I want brands to stop testing on animals.

Cruelty-free Makeup Brands List

My new Cruelty-Free Makeup Brands List is easily searchable! You can choose a letter from the drop down, or click any of the boxes to refine your search.

  • When you see the green dot for vegan next to a brand, that means that the brand is either 100% vegan or has an easy to shop vegan section on their website.
  • The grey dot means that the brand is cruelty-free but has a non-cruelty-free parent company.
  • When you see the pink dot, it means a brand is Leaping Bunny Certified, the gold standard for cruelty-free beauty!
  • See a list of grey area brands and brands that test on animals.

Please Note:  I now believe that all PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies Program Brands are cruelty-free. Here’s why. I’m still working on adding all PETA brands to my list.

Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look

Hello beautiful creatures! I’ve been practicing my 15-20 minute makeup looks lately for work. I wanted to share my Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look, featuring one of the new Danessa Myricks Twin Flames eyeshadows. As you know, I love multichrome eyeshadows. Sometimes liquid formulas can be tricky to use on hooded eyes like mine though, due to the excess skin I have at the crease and outer corner of the eyes. Wondering if you have hooded eyes? Learn all about hooded eyes at Do I Have Hooded Eyes?

For those of you who have reached out to ask, my first week at my new job went well. So far everyone I’ve met and worked with has been very kind and helpful.

How to Use Danessa Myricks Twin Flames Eyeshadows on Hooded Eyes

I reached out to Danessa Myricks to ask her how to make the Twin Flames work on hooded eyes like mine. She said the trick is to leave your eyes closed for 60 seconds while the product dries. I set a timer on my cell phone while I do each eye individually. My Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look took me 20 minutes to put together.

Soulmate Twin Flames Eyeshadow Look

Just a note, I used mostly natural light with a little bit of studio lighting for these photos of my Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look today.

This is such a fast, easy eye look to recreate.

Soulmate Twin Flames Eyeshadow Tutorial

Here are the tutorial steps for my Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look:

  1. Apply your eyeshadow primer. I used CoverGirl Lid Lock, which is the best drugstore eyeshadow primer I’ve found to date.
  2. Use a brush shaped like a Sigma E25 to apply a light layer of Natasha Denona Bia to the lid and crease. Build up the color through the crease to make a little more intense. If you don’t have this color look for a grungey yellow-green in your collection.
  3. Erase any harsh blending lines in your crease with a skin tone shade eyeshadow or powder and a brush like the Sigma E35. I used Cozzette C1 Essential Powder.
  4. Apply Danessa Myricks Soulmate to the lid and use a small brush like a Sigma E21 to diffuse the edges of Soulmate into Bia. Set a timer for 60 seconds, keep your eye closed and fan it with a business card while you wait for the timer to go off. I did each eye individually. If you are shopping your makeup stash, use whatever green duochrome you prefer.
  5. Line the lower lash line with Urban Decay Reflect pencil. This is a greenish goldish brown multichrome pencil that goes with a lot of my green looks but if you don’t have it choose your favorite pencil that is either golden brown or golden green.
  6. Top it off with a bit of mascara. I used Eyeko Fat Brush. Or pop on your favorite set of lashes and go.

I genuinely miss my lash lifts right now. I still haven’t worked up the courage to use the at-home lash lift kit I purchased.

For my super quick makeup looks for work, I tend to apply lipstick very lightly and blot it with tissue or my finger tips. I just want enough color that you can see that I have lips on Zoom, rather than letting my lips be the focus. And yes, I do video meetings daily at work.

Blush and Highlighter Makeup Thoughts

When it comes to me getting ready fast in the mornings, I am typically looking for a blush color that will help to add some definition to my cheeks and face without much effort. Colour Pop Matchmaker was perfect for my Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look as it does just that.

Lately I’ve been reaching for Black Moon Centipede for quick cheek looks because the light champagne gold sheen is perfect for my skin, especially with peach, beige, or brown blushes. See my entire Black Moon Cosmetics Highlighter collection.

I recently purchased Colour Pop Matchmaker and fell in love with it. It’s the best blush I’ve ever purchased from Colour Pop. The color is described as a pale nude with gold pearl. It’s a light peachy beige with gold pearl and a pearlescent finish. This color and finish is amazing! I wish Colour Pop would make a cool toned version of this blush or release more blushes in this pearlized finish. I find it ideal for my skin tone.

Kim Chi Chic Beauty The Most Concealer

For my Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look I applied my concealer after foundation instead of before. I applied my Kim Chi Chic Beauty The Most Concealer in TMC 01 Ivory under my eyes to give me a little more coverage and hide any dark circles. This is a pretty fabulous concealer and it’s my favorite product that I’ve tried from Kim Chi Chic Beauty!

At some point I hope to pick up 2 or 3 additional shades in this concealer formula. The two colors I would like to try for sure are  TMC 24 Green and TMC 27 Pale. Green is to help counter redness. And Pale is supposed to be a very fair yellow. I’ve been trying to determine which of these concealer shades would match a ‘pale biscuit’ to try for a soft natural contour color.

Hell Bunny Fashion

I’ve been wearing a ton of my Hell Bunny shirts lately! They’re perfect for gothic office professional looks and I highly recommend them. You can find Hell Bunny at Hell Bunny, AmazonMod ClothHot Topic, Sourpuss, and probably a ton of other places around the web. See more of my Hell Bunny fashion features.

Urban Decay Hydromaniac Glowy Tinted Hydrator Foundation

Urban Decay Hydromaniac Glowy Tinted Hydrator Foundation in Ultra Fair Neutral

I’ve been testing out the Urban Decay Hydromaniac Glowy Tinted Hydrator Foundation. First, I love how this feels on my skin. Second, I love that so far it has not oxidized on me or darkened in hue, which can happen with foundations because of the skin’s pH levels. Third, I love the dewy glow it gives! Fourth, I like the amount of coverage it offers. If you think it provides too much coverage, I recommend mixing it with a bit of Danessa Myricks Prism FX Hydrating Lotion, which will give it even more glow. If you need more coverage, try mixing it with your favorite concealer.

This is my favorite foundation, by far, that Urban Decay has put out in years. I love the coverage, the glow, and the fact that I actually have a shade I can wear. Now if UD would just make a stick foundation I’d be set! I would have purchased this foundation if I had not been sent it in PR.

I have noticed that the Urban Decay Hydromaniac Glowy Tinted Hydrator Foundation can be a little streaky when applied. I’m not sure if it’s the brush I’m using, which is my beloved Urban Decay Optical Blurring Brush, or what. If I see streaks I use a damp beauty blender to deal with them.

I’ve used the Urban Decay Hydromaniac Glowy Tinted Hydrator Foundation with both the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer and the Danessa Myricks Prism FX Hydrating Lotion. When I pair it with the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, I get flawless and long lasting wear. When I pair it with the Danessa Myricks Prism FX Hydrating Lotion I get extra glow, but at the end of the day I do see some wear through my t-zone. Setting my t-zone with Fenty Lavender Pro Filt’r Powder or Cozzette C1 Essential Powder helps to minimize this wear.

I don’t know you watch my Instagram Stories, but if you do, I share makeup and fashion of the day on my stories during the week. I also share funny memes, inspirational quotes, and random thoughts there. I’ve gotten compliments from other brands, such as Milk Makeup, on how gorgeous and dewy my skin looked while wearing this foundation from my IG stories.

What do you think of my Danessa Myricks Soulmate Look? What sort of look do you put together in 15 to 20 minutes? What do you focus on?

Picture of a woman looking thoughtful about living with PMDD

Hello beautiful people. Today I wanted to talk to you a little about health and living with PMDD. PMDD, because you may not know, stands for premenstrual dysphoric disorder. PMDD is one of the chronic invisible illnesses that I have. I was diagnosed with PMDD in late 2019, but have likely had it much longer.

To be clear, I am not a doctor or a medical professional. I am sharing my experiences with my condition. Please see the full disclaimer at the bottom.

What is PMDD?

PMDD is an extreme form of premenstrual syndrome. Now you may think, oh, it’s just your period or it’s just PMS, no big deal. That’s where you’d be wrong! It’s so much more than ‘just PMS.’ Along with my other chronic invisible illnesses like anxiety, it affects me physically, mentally, and emotionally. And it exacerbates my other health issues. Read more in depth about PMDD at Medical News Today.

Why Does PMDD Happen?

Doctors currently say they don’t know the exact cause of PMDD. I know I personally am very sensitive to my hormonal and seratonin changes. There are a lot of theories thrown around that it has to do with these hormonal and seratonin changes. More research needs to be devoted to it.

What PMDD Feels Like to Me

The symptoms I experience vary from month to month. Some months I may just have minimal cramping, fatigue and brain fog. Usually, I start feeling on edge and irritated by things that normally wouldn’t bother me. I get painful, debilitating cramps, my breasts get sore, and I experience hot flashes in bed when I’m trying to sleep. I bruise easily all the time. I sometimes get migraines, I often feel like I have very little energy.

For a while I struggled to fall asleep even though I was utterly exhausted. It sometimes makes it difficult for me to focus and I lose joy in my hobbies. I start to feel paranoid and like people hate me. I’ll burst into tears over a little thing that wouldn’t bother me otherwise.

Sometimes, it feels like I only have one or two good weeks a month.

Why is PMDD Worse Some Months

PMDD fluctuates each month because of so many internal and external factors, most out of my control. One of the things I had to do to get a diagnosis was keep a mood journal and track how I was feeling and what happened each day. It became pretty evident that stress triggers me. Stress makes my symptoms worse. Extreme stress makes it so I can’t sleep and have crazy mood swings. Some people claim that PMDD ruins their lives, and I can totally understand why. I often feel like I have to be constantly second guessing my brain and its decisions when it comes to people and relationships. Read about how the sex hormone-sensitive gene complex is linked to premenstrual mood disorder.

I’ve found that alcohol makes my PMDD worse, too. So it’s just another reason for me to rarely have a drink.

What Doctor Do You See?

I originally received my PMDD diagnosis from a gynecologist after my therapist determined that some of the symptoms I experienced were not just severe PMS, which I’ve had all my life. The gyn had me try a lot of different treatments, none of which worked for me. I am so sensitive to hormonal changes I cannot even take hormonal birth control anymore. I cannot use an IUD. Some of the gyns I’ve seen about this issue have been very dismissive, which is disappointing when you’re talking about an issue that can make your life hell and make you doubt yourself.

Serenol was the absolute worst of all the treatments. It exacerbated my condition to the extreme and made me a different person. I cried for hours each night during the time I tried it.

How I Treat My PMDD

A Woman in Silhouette thinking PMDD is Hell

Like many illnesses that don’t primarily affect men, there aren’t a lot of great medical options for it.  Serenol was the worst of the options I tried from the gyn. I can’t do SSRI antidepressants or birth control. Other things I tried, such as evening primrose oil and chasteberry have done nothing for me. I take a vitamin D supplement, as well as other vitamins, which are recommended to help PMDD.

I meditate every morning and exercise daily, even if it’s just a short 30 minute walk (Read about my Miracle Mornings). I eat low carb, low sugar, high protein, high healthy fats, low salt, and no caffeine. I rarely drink alcohol. I do all the diet and exercise recommendations I’ve been given from the doctors to help manage this condition and others of mine. All of these changes that I’ve made have been very beneficial for my health and my anxiety.(Learn about how keto may help anxiety)

When I went to see my medical cannabis doctor for a checkup in early 2020, I explained my PMDD issues and the things I’d tried from the gyn. I’d been experiencing appetite issues and severe inability to sleep for months by this point, along with a myriad of mood swings. He suggested I take a large dose of CBD at night before bed in addition to my other medications to help improve my sleep.

Within the first week of changing how I take my medication to include taking a CBD pill at night, I started having more normal sleep. For the past 6 months, I’ve experienced very minimal PMDD symptoms. I’m able to sleep again, which is great. However, if I experience extra stress, my PMDD flares up in full force and nothing helps.

In short, my lifestyle, CBD, exercise and diet seem to help, but not 100% of the time. I genuinely hope that there are scientists somewhere developing medication to treat this. Living with PMDD is hell some months.

Again, I am not a doctor or a medical professional. This information about PMDD is for general informational purposes only. Blingy New Years Nails

Blingy New Years Nails

Happy New Years Eve, as I’m at home getting ready to bring in the New Year at home in style. Today I did Blingy New Years Nails since I wanted something over the top to celebrate 2020 ending.

About the Mani

I  used Orly Nail Tip Primer and iGel Base Coat as the foundation of my mani. Two coats of Orly Builder in a Bottle were used to build up the nails so I could apply full coverage tips. The full coverage tips I used today are ENC Mini Sculpture Coffin. IGel No Wipe Jewelry Gel was used for the gems and iGel No Wipe Top Coat to finish the nails.

This was my first time using the ENC Mini Sculpture Coffin tips. I like how ENC tips have so many sizes and they’re in individual bags so that the tips don’t get mixed together. These tips feel more flimsy than my Kiara Sky or Apres tips, but their packaging doesn’t end up with the tips getting mixed together, which happens with my Kiara Sky tips. I will be buying the Kiara Sky Short Coffin Tips whenever they come back into stock.

When I tried to file the inside of my ENC Mini Sculpture Coffin tips, the same way I have my Kiara Sky Short Almond and Kiara Sky Short Stiletto, the ENC tip cracked and had weird chunks come out of it, so I gave up on that. Instead, to prep these I wiped the inside by the cuticles with alcohol and then used the Orly Nail Tip Primer inside.

Need a tutorial on how to apply full coverage tips? Here’s my How to DIY Gel Nails at Home!

Blingy New Years Nails

Black and Silver Nail Art Mani

I’m right hand dominant. I find it easier to do less fancy nail art on my right hand. I used 3 coats of Madam Glam Earth Day Everyday on my thumb. I did 2 coats of Madam Glam Perfect Black on the rest of my nails. I did a thin coat of Earth Day Everyday on my pinky to add some sparkle there. I dotted Earth Day Everyday on my ring, middle and index fingers by the cuticles, then used a striping brush to drag out a little bit of the glitter. Star gems were used on the ring and index finger, while a moon gem was used on the middle finger.

Black and Silver Nail Art Mani Blingy New Years Nails

For my left hand, I went a little crazy with the AB gems and stars. I used the same moon shape on my middle finger, and a 5 point star on my ring and index. The thumb and pinky are the same as my right hand. I used these tiny AB sprinkles, moons, and stars. I can’t find the exact same kit I bought that had red and purple AB stars I used, but I did find these purple stars and these red stars.

What I’m Doing for New Years

This year for New Years Eve, Dave and I are doing takeout sushi from my favorite local sushi place, Bangkok Sushi. I’ve got a bottle of champagne for us and special dog treats for Amaya and Nyx. We’ll be having a glass of champagne at midnight to celebrate. Until then, we’re binging on the newest season of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and playing World of Warcraft Shadowlands.

Dave and I are patiently waiting to get our COVID vaccinations. We will be getting them as soon as our doctor tells us they are available to us. Until then, we’re staying in at home. I use Instacart for grocery delivery or do curbside pickup at places but I don’t go shopping indoors. We don’t eat indoors at restaurants, we don’t go to parties or host parties. We’ve been doing this since March 2020, I figure we can continue to stay safe at home until we get our vaccination and booster.

I love you all and I’m wishing you a safe and happy New Year! May it be filled with amazing and positive things. Thank you for making it through 2020 with me.

How are you celebrating New Years safely this year?

Best Purples Makeup Tutorial

Hello beautiful creatures! Today I’m sharing my best purples makeup tutorial with you featuring my favorite purple makeup products. This is a mostly vegan makeup tutorial, as almost everything I used is vegan. Everything, as always, is cruelty-free. You can absolutely have vibrant, beautiful makeup that is cruelty-free and vegan in this day and age. In fact, I’d even argue that the best multichromes and duochromes are vegan. This is a full face purple makeup tutorial rather than being split into eyes and complexion. And yes, I have hooded eyes, so this is a hooded eyes makeup tutorial.

Blink Cut Crease Tutorials for Hooded Eyes

Here are a few picture and video tutorials that showcase the blink cut crease method for hooded eyes. These are beginner friendly for hooded eyes, in my opinion.

Full Face of Purple Makeup

Em Cosmetics Cloud Dream Daydream Cushion Foundation

I had the worst time with my lashes when I filmed this. I could not get the magnetic lashes to stay on at my outer corner, despite putting extra liner there. I guess my hooded eyes just kept eating the magnetic liner. I really need to make myself use the at home lash kit I purchased to give myself a lash lift. I miss having my lashes look great.

I tried out a new foundation for this best purples makeup tutorial. I used the Em Cosmetics Daydream Cushion Foundation in Cloud, for Fair Light Skin. I feel that this pulls neutral to yellow in undertone. It’s slightly deeper than I normally wear, but I adore the finish. Light to Medium coverage foundations are my favorite. This cushion foundation is very easy to apply and perfect for no makeup makeup looks or light coverage days. While it does have SPF 50 PA+++, you have to always look at the SPF in makeup as BONUS coverage. Don’t rely on this as your primary SPF. I personally wear Supergoop Unseen SPF 40 every day on my face.

Lethal Cosmetics eyeshadows are so wonderful to work with! They’re easy to build up and blend out. The color payoff is fantastic. Spirit is such an amazing purple.

If you watch the video tutorial above, you’ll notice that I did struggle a bit with the Danessa Myricks Twin Flames eyeshadow in Amour. This is such a beautiful color and it is waterproof and budgeproof, but I wish it dried down faster. I’m getting some lifting and pooling in the crease, which causes some weird bare looking patches. Once this product is dry it doesn’t budge, but you have to get it to dry. I’ve reached out via email to ask for tips on how to use the Twin Flames with hooded eyes like mine.

Have you tried the Danessa Myricks Twin Flames? Any tips? What color do you want me to do for my next monochromatic look?

What Makes an Indie Brand Indie?

What Makes an Indie Brand Indie?

Hello beautiful creatures! Today I wanted to discuss What Makes an Indie Brand Indie? As a veteran blogger of over 13 years, I wanted to share my thoughts on this complex topic with you. This is a very long blog post, be aware!

(Trigger Warning: brief mention of suicide in this post.)

What is the Definition of Indie?

First, let’s look at the word indie. It’s short for Independent. Merriam-Webster defines independent as not subject to control by others, not affiliated with a larger controlling unit. It also gives the example of an independent bookstore.

By the literal definition of the word, an indie brand is a brand that is independently owned, not beholden to a parent company, much like the independent bookstore mentioned.

A brand like Colour Pop, who is owned by Seed Labs, is not an indie brand, because they are owned by someone else.

Rituel de Fille, which is a luxury beauty brand, is owned by three sisters. They aren’t owned by a parent-company, so they are an indie brand.

How Did You Get Into Indie?

As a long-time Goth, I gravitate towards indie brands because I love to find and use unique and custom items. If you’ve ever seen my gothic bedroom, you’ll know I designed my bed frame myself and found an indie furniture maker to bring it to life. For my Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Gothic Lookbook I hired my friend and indie fashion designer Spellbound Stitches (see my interview with Carlye) to create many of the looks. And just like I love to support artists in the Goth music and fashion scene, I love to support the same sort of beauty brands.

Additionally, for a long time, indie brands were the only one to cater to my skin tone for foundation. When my skin could tolerate it, I loved my mineral foundation from Meow Cosmetics. When I was searching for a foundation to match me back in 2008, I stumbled upon Meow Cosmetics and that led me down my indie makeup rabbit hole.

While I started blogging in 2008, I only went cruelty-free in 2012. At that time, I was delighted to learn that all of the indie brands I loved were cruelty-free. This is another reason I’ve continued to support the indie community.

From 2012-2014 I almost stopped shopping with indie brands after being harassed and sent death threats from some indie brand owners and their sycophants. I was told I was ugly, stupid, talentless, and that I should kill myself or stop blogging. These comments came in through my blog, email, Facebook, and reddit. That harassment did somewhat sour me on such brands for a while. Who wouldn’t want to avoid a community where you were harassed to the point that you almost commit suicide. Thank the Gods for therapy. And then there’s things like what happened with Evil Shades, GlitterSniffer, and Saucebox that just make me so upset.

Are There Different Types of Indies?

There are actually several different types of indie brands I’ve run across over the years. I’ll share them below to help explain. Believe it or not, where a brand is sold is NOT the only indicator of their status. You can find some indie brands at Ulta, Sephora, and Credo Beauty. This is because those retailers are trying to tap into the indie beauty market by showcasing such brands.

100% Handmade Beauty Brands

There are many 100% handmade indie beauty brands. What this means is that these brand owners come up with their own unique base formulas, mix in their micas, and create their products. Oftentimes, these brands focus on loose makeup products, but sometimes they will offer pressed or other formulas. Silk Naturals and Chiroptera Beauty are examples of 100% handmade brands. They have 100% unique formulas they create themselves. Aromaleigh is another example of a brand that handcrafts every product.

100% Unique Formulas and In-House Lab Beauty Brands

The next type of brand is a larger one. This is a brand that has 100% unique formulas and an in-house lab to press and manufactur their products. They may have nicer packaging than a strictly 100% handmade brand. Fyrinnae is a fantastic example of this type of brand, as they’ve had their own in-house lab and studio for years. They’re a great example of what makes an indie brand indie. Everything they make they formulate themselves and they don’t sell anything private label. I believe that Lethal Cosmetics, Baby Bat Beauty and Lunatick Cosmetic Labs are also in this category.

100% Unique Formulas + Private Labeling

There are some brands that create 100% unique formulas for their eyeshadows and staple product lines, but they also sell some private label products. BFTE Cosmetics is an example of this. They have gorgeous eyeshadows, but they also sell private label lashes and indelible gel eyeliners as extras. These items are clearly labeled as private label.

100% Unique Formulas + Outside Labs

The brands that I often see the most confusion over are the ones that have 100% unique formulas but use an outside lab to create and fill their products, rather than do it in house. Some examples of this would be Sugarpill, Black Moon Cosmetics, and Milk Makeup. They often have sleek packaging that looks very similar to their mainstream counterparts and they are sometimes sold at the same major retailers. Just read the interview I conducted with Amy (Shrinkle) of Sugarpill a decade ago to see how hard she works on her brand.

Cult Nails (RIP) was a great example of an indie brand with 100% unique formulas that utilized an outside lab to fill their nail polish bottles. The owner would then get those bottles, pack them herself, and mail them out to customers.

What Are Some Non-Indie Brands?

Urban Decay, one of my longtime favorite mainstream brands, is owned by L’Oreal, so not indie. Eyeko, my favorite mascara brand, is owned by the Hut Group, who also owns Illamasqua. Milani, one of my favorite drugstore brands because of their Afterglow Strobe Light Liquid Highlighter and Baked Blushes, is owned by Gryphon Investors. CoverGirl, the largest drugstore brand to ever acquire Leaping Bunny certification, is owned by Coty.

You can often see a change in the quality of products as well as the lack of innovation of products when an indie brand is sold to a parent company. This may not happen every time, but it does seem to happen often enough to mention.

What About Private Label?

Unfortunately, it appears that a ton of brands claiming to be indie that are actually just selling private label formulas that they don’t customize are popping up. So while they may be independent brand, as in not controlled by a parent company, it’s also very likely you could buy the same product for a vastly different price from another seller.

As an example, I’m obsessed with teals. I bought what was supposed to be 4 different teal gel eyeliners from 4 different indie brands, for vastly different prices ranging from $4.99 to $19.99. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when I found out they were all the exact same gel eyeliner from a private label company. I was furious.

I genuinely feel that if brands are selling a non-unique private label formula from a manufacturer like Ladyburd or Aliexpress, they need to be very clear about it. Many people who buy indie are doing so to support independent artists and do not want to buy private label that lacks creativity and may lack quality.

Pricing

Some individuals feel that indie brands should always be inexpensive. Many indie brands use very high quality ingredients, along with no-frills cheap packaging, which makes them the same price or less than drugstore makeup brands. Other indies choose to invest in higher quality packaging and are at a more luxury price point. This infuriates some indie makeup lovers as they expect everything to be cheap. I’ve actually had people tell me that Rituel de Fille can’t possibly be indie because they’re too expensive.

Other people gripe if there are no samples available. Some indies don’t do samples because it’s not cost-effective. I’ve seen many indie brands go out of business because they sold very generous samples, so people never felt inclined to buy the full size.

Final Thoughts

I’m often dismayed by the virtue signaling I see in the indie beauty community. Some people feel the need to put down fellow makeup lovers or brands because they don’t fit into the tiny purist box of their definition of indie. In other words, these people put down brands if they’re not 100% handmade. If they move to using a lab because they’ve become more successful, suddenly they fail the Purity Test, they’re no longer indie, and they don’t belong where indie beauty is discussed. Is Sydney Grace no longer an indie brand because they made a high-quality pressed palette? No, I don’t think so; they’re still indie.

I disagree with dumping an indie brand just because they’re more successful or popular. It feels like some of the annoying people I’ve met in the music scene who say ‘oh I liked that band before they were popular.’ Well, that’s great, but don’t put others down for liking them.

I do agree that brands that strictly sell non-unique private label need to be clearly marked as such. They don’t fit the ‘Spirit’ of indie, even if they do sort of fit the literal definition of the word. Sally Sue down the street could decide to open up her own indie makeup company called Pinkie Pie and then pick eyeshadows out of a catalogue on a site like Aliexpress to create her perfect pink eyeshadow palette, have it put together and sell it, but it isn’t something I want to buy because the eyeshadow formula is going to be lackluster. It also feels dishonest to market this as indie.

What are your thoughts on this nuanced topic?

Lethal Cosmetics Blushes Swatches

  • Scatter – icy lavender with blue highlights

  • Nectar – peach blush
  • Neophyte – honey yellow blush
  • Quartz – beige bronzer with cool undertones
  • Subzero – lilac high-shine gloss with blue green duochrome glitter lip gloss
  • Phase – deep berry matte gel liner

This section of my Lethal Cosmetics Indie Makeup Haul isn’t all Lethal Blushes, but it is mostly blushes. I also included the highlighter, bronzer, lip gloss and gel liner in this group.

Lethal has several great looking gel liner colors to choose from. On my wish list is Buffer (white matte), Redux (black matte), and Bitcrush (neon pink matte). Gel liners are $15.50.

I wanted to try their Flux highlighter, but it only comes in a premade palette called Boreal. I already own the blush shade Nectar in that palette, and I’m not sure the bronzer shade, Atlas, would work for me, as it looks like it could pull orange on very fair skin like mine. Highlighters are $18.50 each and the palette I mentioned is $37.

The Lethal Blushes are absolutely gorgeous and I love the ones I own. Sanguine (true red), Tendril (ginger), and Morphology (berry) are on my wish list. I really adore this blush formula as it’s very easy to blend out. Blushes are $14 each.

Quartz is a fantastic ‘bronzer’ for contouring thanks to its beautiful cool undertones. Bronzers are $14 each.

Makeup Inspiration

Here’s some makeup inspiration with products from my Lethal Cosmetics Indie Makeup Haul.

Monochromatic Purple Makeup Look

For the above look I used Lethal Cosmetics Sequence, Spirit, Synth, Deceit, and Scatter to create the look, along with Danessa Myricks Amour on the eyes. I used Lethal Scatter, Quartz, and Hybrid on my cheeks and Lethal Subzero on my lips. See the full details of this Monochromatic Purple Makeup Look. I will be shooting a tutorial on this eye look.

Smokey Eyes Purple

I used Lethal Quartz and Hybrid on my cheeks in this look. See the full details at Black Moon Cosmetics Urban Myth Tutorial.

Lethal Cosmetics Indie Makeup Haul Final Thoughts

Lethal Cosmetics Indie Makeup Haul

I’m very impressed with everything I’ve picked up in my Lethal Cosmetics Indie Makeup Haul. Lethal is my pick for my favorite new brand of 2020. I’m so happy I gave them a try! If you’re looking for a new indie brand, I recommend Lethal Cosmetics. Don’t be put off by the fact that they’re outside of the USA. Their shipping time is lightning fast.

Lethal Purple Makeup Look

Lethal Purple Makeup Look

Hello my friends! Today I’m sharing my bad ass Lethal Purple Makeup Look. I filmed a tutorial on this look but I’m going to have to reshoot it because the camera kept focusing on my ear instead of my face through half of it. I love purple makeup so much! Yes, this is another monochromatic purple look. I really enjoy doing monochromatic makeup looks in my favorite colors like purple, teal, and green. This is a nearly all vegan makeup look, too!

Purple Eye Makeup

In casse you don’t know, I have oily, hooded eyelids. I always need to wear eyeshadow primer because of how much excess skin I have on my eyes. And I typically always set my eyeshadow primer, or at least the crease. All that excess skin likes to rub away eyeshadow.

Lethal Cosmetics is a 100% cruelty-free and 100% vegan indie makeup brand from Berlin, Germany. I’m obsessed with my blushes and eyeshadows from them.

Danessa Myricks is a 100% cruelty-free and 100% vegan Black Owned indie makeup brand. I’m still hooked on my Danessa Myricks Prism FX Hydrating Lotion, which I love to mix into my foundations to give me glow. I’m still experimenting with the Twin Flames I have, but I love the color shift and how they glow!

Nabla officially makes my favorite eye pencils these days. Nabla Cupid’s Arrow pencils, while having a limited shade range, are the only things creamy enough that they don’t hurt my upper waterline when I apply them. They also stay in place and last all day once set. I greatly appreciate this on my oily, hooded eyelids.

My lashes still won’t hold a curl. I still haven’t been brave enough to try the at home lash lift kit I purchased. Maybe this weekend! Until then, I’m using my Eyeko Fat Brush & Lash Alert Mascaras. The combo together seems to make my lashes visible and they pretend to hold a curl for a minute.

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer is still my favorite primer to use beneath foundation. It is amazing for dry skin like mine.

I love the Doll 10 Beauty Anti-Stress Skin Perfector in Fair but I wish I had a better shade match because Fair is too dark on its own. I do like it mixed with other foundations or used the way I did it today. Today I used it as a deeper foundation shade to give my face more dimension, as Mickey has done on me in the past. As a makeup artist, he will often mix two or three shades to create dimension on the face so that it’s not flat.

After my primer dried, I applied to the perimeter of my face with Doll 10 Beauty Anti-Stress Skin Perfector in Fair mixed with Danessa Myricks Prism FX Hydrating Lotion. Then I applied Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation in .1 mixed with Danessa Myricks Prism FX Hydrating Lotion to the center of my face. I contoured the hollows of my cheeks, the edges of my forehead and my jawline with Kiko Hazelnut Sculpting Stick. I blended all of this out. I set under my eyes with the Laura Mercier Under Eye Setting Powder, highlighted the tops of my cheeks with Lethal Scatter, contoured my face with Lethal Quartz, and added a flush with Lethal Hybrid. To finish, I dusted Nyx High Glass Finishing Powder in Light lightly all over.

I’m nowhere near Mickey’s skill level with making my face multidimensional, but I’m having fun as I practice and try different techniques.

How are you having fun with makeup lately?

  • Rose – warm mauve
  • Ochre – deep yellow
  • Olive – golden green
  • Cerulean – light muted blue

  • Violet – warm purple
  • Greige – deep grey brown

Here are the eight shades for my Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows Review. See additional swatches in my introductory post.

Always On Cream Shadow Comparisons

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadow Eye Primer Comparison

I swatched four shades that can be used as an eye shadow primer base. From top to bottom we have Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden, Smashbox Vanilla, CoverGirl Nude Awakening, and Smashbox Rose. I prefer to use Urban Decay Eden because it works well with my very fair neutral to cool yellow undertone and it’s the lightest of these four shades.

The top swatch is Smashbox Greige and the bottom is CoverGirl Cocoa-Nuts. These are two shades that I like to use as neutrals to contour the eyes.

Here we have Smashbox Violet on top and CoverGirl Stargazer in the middle. The bottom swatch is Smashbox Violet with CoverGirl Stargazer layered on top.

I swatched Smashbox Cerulean on top, followed by Smashbox Ultramarine in the middle, and CoverGirl Night Night at the bottom.

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows Review

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows Review and Swatches

Please watch my video for my full review. These are the best cream eyeshadows that I’ve tried in over a decade. They’re perfect hooded eyes makeup as they don’t budge at all. Below are some highlights.

The Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows are 100% vegan, which is awesome. In addition to Smashbox’s cruelty-free status, I was thrilled to learn that Smashbox is a part of the Responsible Mica Initiative, which means that they are also human cruelty-free in addition to animal cruelty-free.

I’m impressed with the formula of the Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows. I’ve done wear tests with and without eyeshadow primer.  As you know, I have oily, hooded eyes and have to use an eyeshadow primer. This eyeshadow formula lasts on me with or without primer. If I skip primer and only use the cream shadow for my look, there is visible fading by the end of the day. It’s not a ton, but it is noticeable when tested next to primer. There is no creasing. If I put powder eyeshadow on top it lasts like a primer.

I love that the Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows are similar to playing with paints from art class. I do wish that Smashbox had included a primary red and a white in this collection. White can be used to pastelize shades. If you combine a primary red with the yellow and deep teal blue, you can create just about any color you want using color theory. I hope that Smashbox expands this eyeshadow collection and adds more shades.

What do you think of the Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows? Are you a fan of Smashbox? Have you ever heard of the Responsible Mica Initiative?

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows

Hello beautiful people! Today I’m sharing my newest makeup acquisitions, the Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows. Back in the day, I was obsessed with my MAC paints that came in a tube. So when I saw Smashbox coming out with these new eyeshadows, I knew I needed to try a few. For those of you who don’t know, Smashbox is a cruelty-free beauty brand. Many of their products are vegan. The Always On Cream Shadows are 100% vegan.

Here are swatches of my Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows collection. From top to bottom in the photo above we have: Vanilla, Ocre, Olive, Cerulean, Ultramarine, Violet, and Greige.

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows Shade Descriptions

  • Vanilla – cream
  • Ocre – deep yellow
  • Olive – golden green
  • Cerulean – muted blue
  • Ultramarine – deep teal blue
  • Violet – purple
  • Greige – grey brown

Currently there are about 15 shades in this Smashbox line. I’ve purchased 8, and have 7 to show you today. I have Vanilla, Ocre, Olive, Cerulean, Ultramarine, Violet and Greige. I’m waiting for Rose (mauve) to get here.

Fair Skinned Primer Comparison

I have very fair skin with a neutral to cool yellow undertone. My best foundation matches currently are: Smashbox Hydrating Foundation in .1, Milk Makeup Flex Stick in Porcelain, Juvia’s Place Shade Stick in Tokyo, Idun Minerals Nordic Veil in Jorunn, Clove + Hallow Skin Tint in 1, and Nyx Born to Glow Foundation in Pale.

Fair Skinned Primer Comparison
From top to bottom we have CoverGirl Nude Awakening, Smashbox Vanilla, and Urban Decay Eden. Photo on the left is in Indirect sunlight, while the one on the right is in Direct sunlight.

I included a comparison between Smashbox Vanilla, CoverGirl Nude Awakening (reviewed here), and Urban Decay Eden. CoverGirl Nude Awakening is $10.99 for .16 fl oz / .5 ml, while Smashbox Vanilla is $22 for .34 fl oz / 10 ml, and Urban Decay Eden is $24 for .33 fl oz / 10 ml. Urban Decay Eden (and Sin) are my two favorite eyeshadow primers. Basically, CoverGirl is 1/2 the size and about 1/2 the price of Smashbox, while Urban Decay is a little more expensive.

CoverGirl Nude Awakening is more of a beige-pink on my skin tone, while Smashbox Vanilla is a beige-peach. Urban Decay Eden is a light beige-cream. While all 3 colors work on my eyes to hide discoloration or to work as a quick one and done, I still prefer the hue of Eden.

Quick Primer vs. No Primer Comparison With Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows

While writing up this post I thought I should throw together a quick comparison of how lovely and vibrant these colors look on bare skin as well as on Urban Decay Eden, my go-to primer. I lightly dusted my crease on the Eden side with my Cozzette C1 Essential Powder to set it.

No Primer

Above is the bare side, no primer or setting powder. I used Olive on the inner half of my lid, Ultramarine on the outer half, then I quickly tapped and blended with my finger tip. I used a brush to ‘clean up’ the crease with Vanilla, then lined the lower lid with Cerulean. I hastily put my Haus Punk Matte Liquid Liner on. Please excuse my shaky hands.

This is the side where I used Urban Decay Eden. Olive was applied to the inner lid, Ultramarine on the outer lid, Cerulean on the lower lid and Vanilla to clean up the crease. Same Haus Punk Matte Liquid Liner. Again, sorry for the shaky hands with liner for this hasty look.

I’m wearing this right now as I write this post and Dave told me he loves this look and the colors. It’s a little crazy because of the bad liner, but it does a good job of showing how vibrant these cream shadows really are. I promise real looks with these soon!

Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows Thoughts

Olive (golden green) and Ultramarine (deep teal blue) are my favorites so far. I love wearing them individually or blending them together to create a golden green teal blue gradient. It makes me feel like I’m wearing a Monet painting. I haven’t had a chance to wear Violet yet. Both Violet and Cerulean seem to be a slightly thinner consistency than the rest of the shadows.

These eyeshadows are very easy to apply and blend out, whether you choose to use your finger tips or an eyeshadow brush. It’s also very easy to blend shades together to create new colors. Though on that note, I’m a little disappointed that there are no pure primary colors – red, yellow, and blue. You do have a deep yellow with Ocre, and Ultramarine gives you a beautiful deep teal blue, but there’s no red shade for me. The color I was the most obsessed with when I had my MAC paints was the red. I’d swipe the red on my lids, put on really thick black eyeliner and head out the door.

So far I’m loving the Smashbox Always On Cream Shadows. Have you ever tried cream shadows like these?
