Too Faced Shadow Insurance Candlelight Review

A while ago I purchased Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance Candlelight from Sephora.com. I wanted to see how well this would compare to my holy grail, Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

This is Too Faced’s Candlelight unblended on my skin, taken with flash.

This is the picture taken under a daybulb, unblended. You can see how it really is a lovely light golden shade.

The shadow blends out to a lovely golden sheen on the back of my hand. This translates to a brightening but subtle eye shadow primer.

The Website Claims:
Our legendary Shadow Insurance primer is now romantically lit with the shimmering golden glow of candlelight.
Long wearing
Golden Glow
Instant Pigment payoff
Minimizes imperfections: Our Vitamin enriched, silicone based formula glides over lids, smoothing the appearance of crepe skin and brightening a dull or discolored lid.

The Ingredients are:
Isododecane, Talc, Cyclopentasiloxane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Polyethylene, Triethylhexanoin, Trihydroxystearin, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Isopropyl Lanolate, VP/Eicosene Copolymer, Dimethicone, Propylene Carbonate, Phenoxyethanol, PEG-40 Stearate, Tocopherol, Polysilicone-11, Laureth-12, Gold, Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Bismuth Oxychloride CI 77163.

Price:
$18 for .35 oz

Does it live up to its claims?
The color, as you can tell from the swatches, is truly a shimmering gold shade. This works equally as well as TFSI does for me. It’s just as fantastic as the original. You can see how it looks with various shades of shadow.
Fyrinnae Futuristic Glamrock, Fyrinnae Sugar Skulls, MAC All That Glitters, Meow Skeptic, MAC Fairylite, MAC Vapour, MAC Vellum and Venomous Pegasus, all on top of Candlelight.

Candlelight was used as the basis for this look, with UD’s shadow pencil in Lit with Too Faced Sexpresso to deepen the outer corner & MAC Blanc Type to highlight.

Candlelight was used here with Fyrinnae Chaotic Evil on the inner 3/4 of the lid, Fyrinnae Sugar Skulls on the outer 1/4 of lid blended inwards and the crease.

Would I purchase again?
Yes, I probably would. This primer lives up to all of its claims, and I love this almost as much as I love the original TFSI. It’s especially nice when I want to warm up a look. I think if you’re a gold lover and a TFSI lover, you’ll definitely love this primer.

Have you tried Too Faced Shadow Insurance Candlelight? If so, did you like it?

Product purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

  1. I haven’t tried it as I was still curious as to how it was different from the original. Does it change the color of the shadows then?
You can use this by itself for a wash of color.

  2. I reeeeeally want to try this, but I’m always hesitant to try anything different with eye primer (even if my HG is the regular TFSI).

  3. This looks like Too Face’s soothing eyebase that’s discontinued. Have you tried their Glitter Glue? Its awesome!

  4. I’m not a big fan of gold or warm tones. But original TFSI is a holy grail of mine, too!

And thanks again for all your help with the dupes I was looking for last month – you were a tremendous help!

  5. Oh wow! That is a beautiful primer!! I’ve been debating picking it up at Sephora, and now I’m sold!

  6. How does this compare to the Lockdown cream shadows? They’ve been up on a discount site for a while now, and I’m wondering if those are worth it…

    1. I have the lockdown in the Teal shade, and you have to remember to shake it up and then apply it, because otherwise it separates. To me, this is a different/better formula, because it didn’t separate on me when I first used it.

  7. Ahhh. this sounds like what TF First Base should have been. A beautiful gold sheen shadow base. But with the TFSI formula it won’t crease like First Base did. I MUST purchase this on my next trip to Sephora. Thanks for the review!!!

    1. Yeah I heard that First Base had a bad formula but never tried it out myself. I really like Candlelight.

  8. Love this! But I may pass on it for a while because I have a new tube of Lockdown in Bondage (light taupe) and I think they would have similar effects. But if I didn’t …. I would go for it.

    1. Hmm, this is definitely gold as opposed to taupe but I’ve not tried Bondage out. It’s good that you like it 🙂

      1. I know! (killin’ me) Plus, Bodage has some chunks of glitter in it… which is different. Sigh. 🙂 But still… it’s great to know that you love Candlelight!

  9. That’s pretty, how would you compare it to UDPP in Sin? I love Sin but doesn’t quite work for me with a lot of eyeshadows as in it it mutes the colors a little too much even if I use Pixie Epoxy.

    1. I’ll check and see if I have Sin, I can’t remember if I do or not. I think I do. If I have it, I’ll swatch it side by side for you.
