PRK Surgery

PRK Surgery
PRK Surgery

Today I’m having my PRK Surgery. PRK stands for photorefractive keratectomy. It will correct my myopia. PRK has no flap like LASIK, so while there are no possible flap complications, it also has a longer heal time. So I will be spending time in bed resting while my eyes heal, which can take up to a week or more depending on how things go. Wish me luck!

For those of you who are curious in contacts I wear -9, and in glasses I think I’m -10.75 and -11.15 (or something like that). My cornea was too thin for LASIK, which is why I’m not having that. I’m thankful to be a good candidate for PRK.

From my understanding, PRK involves having the top layer of the eye removed (rather than a flap peeled back), the eye reshaped with a laser, and then a bandage contact placed upon the eye to protect the eye until the top layer of the eye grows back. This is why it has a longer heal time than LASIK, since with LASIK, you reshape the eye and put the flap back in place. With PRK, there’s no flap to put back.

I’ve got some posts from friends scheduled while I heal, so I hope that you enjoy them. I’ll miss you while I’m healing up!

  1. Hope all goes well and you heal quickly! I had Lasik and it was SO WORTH IT. My eyesight was very bad and I had astigmatism as well… I couldn’t wear contact lenses and wearing glasses would trigger terrible migraine-like sinus headaches. I am so glad I did it and I would have had PRK if I hadn’t been a good candidate for Lasik. It’s really life-changing!

  2. I hope you heal quickly and without complications. I’ll be thinking of you. Take care, Phyrra!

  3. I really hope the surgery works well and that you get some much needed rest whilst this is happening. All of us will be thinking of you.

  4. Will miss you too! You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers for quick healing! I can see how you would want to do it, as without contacts or glasses you really can’t get around at all. Mine are only about -2.5 so it wouldn’t be worth it for me and I have other health complications. But sounds like you are a great candidate! Good luck! When you come back I’ll have my blog ready to show you. I put a link to your site in it as my fave cf blogger/cf resources! XO

  5. Hope everything goes well! Please report back and let us know how it went and your thoughts. I’m considering vision-correcting surgery, not sure which kind I would be eligible for.

  6. I hope your surgery goes well and your recovery is quick and smooth. I’m excited to see who else is posting while you recover!
