Literary Lacquers Je Reviens Swatches Review

Je Reviens
The buoy was just opposite, about thirty feet away. There was something written on it. I craned my neck sideways to read the lettering. “Je Reviens.” What a funny name. Not like a boat… “Je Reviens” – “I come back.” Yes, I suppose it was quite a good name for a boat. Only it had not been right for that particular boat which would never come back again.

Je Reviens is a deep teal linear holo with holographic sparkle.

Rebecca was assumed to have drowned in her little sailboat, Je Reviens, despite being known as an excellent sailor. Je Reviens means I come back or I return, is it ironic that the boat is named such? Has the boat disappeared beneath the water for good or does the name herald future events?

Literary Lacquers Rebecca, Always Rebecca Swatches Review

Rebecca, Always Rebecca
“Rebecca, always Rebecca. Wherever I walked in Manderley, wherever I say, even in my thoughts and in my dreams, I met Rebecca. I knew her figure now, the long slim legs, the small and narrow feet…. I could guess her laughter and her smile. If I heard it, even among a thousand others, I should recognize her voice. Rebecca, always Rebecca. I should never be rid of Rebecca.”

Rebecca, Always Rebecca is an eggplant linear holo with holographic sparkle

In the novel, our unnamed narrator, a young girl known only to us as The Second Mrs. deWinter becomes obsessed with the supposed perfection of her husbands deceased first wife, Rebecca. She is constantly comparing herself to Rebecca and supposes that everyone that she meets in her new life is also comparing her unfavorably to the accomplished, beautiful and socially connected Rebecca who has been dead for less than a year.

Literary Lacquers Shadow Between Us

Shadow Between Us

He put his hands over mine and looked into my face. “Rebecca has won,” he said.

I stared at him, my heart beating strangely, my hands suddenly cold beneath his hands.

“Her shadow between us all the time,” he said. “Her dammed shadow keeping us from one another. How could I hold you like this, my darling, my little love, with the fear always in my heart that this would happen? I remembered her eyes as she looked at me before she died. I remembered that slow treacherous smile.”

Shadow Between Us is a smoky grey linear holo with holographic sparkle

Has the shadow and specter of Rebecca and her death poisoned the potential for a happy life and marriage for Maxim and his young wife? In Manderley, the ancestral home of the de Winter’s her presence is felt everywhere. Her abandoned bedroom is the best room in the house. Her preferences are still observed. How can our young narrator ever hope to stand on her own in these circumstances?

Literary Lacquers Luggage For Your Journey

Luggage For Your Journey

To honor Sir Pratchett’s work and his charity work with Alzheimer’s Research UK, Literary Lacquers has designed a limited edition charity polish, Luggage For Your Journey. In the Discworld novels, The Luggage is a recurring character that travels, protects (at times voraciously) and accompanies the wizard Rincewind. The Luggage is otherworldly, and yet becomes integral into the fabric of Discworld. This polish is designed to honor Sir Terry Pratchett’s amazing literary career, to thank him for the journey into other realms and to serve as a reminder that there is always a companion for life’s many journeys.

Luggage for Your Journey is a coppery brown linear holographic polish packed with holographic sparkle.

The bottles of Luggage For Your Journey will be sold for $12 and $5 from each bottle will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK. The polish will be sold as a preorder only from October 10, 2014 through October 17, 2014.

You can find the preorder here.

To me, Je Reviens is a deep, almost smoky teal green with blue sparkles and holographic goodness. The finish is stunning. It’s easy to apply and wear.

I couldn’t get a picture of Rebecca, Always Rebecca that I was happy with (and the sun wasn’t out). To me this is a dusty or smoky purple and I feel like the blue sparkle and holographic finish really stands out.

My favorite in the collection is Shadow Between Us. When the copper sparks hit the light it makes me think of some sort of fire opal. It’s a smoky grey with holographic finish.

Luggage for My Journey is a beautiful soft copper with brown tones. This polish makes me a little sad and a little happy. My grandmother’s sister, Mary, had Alzheimers. My grandmother would go visit her every day at the nursing home (and I went with her sometimes), even though Mary never remembered us. Even after she lost the ability to speak, Mary would remember her husband, but not really anyone else. It was heartbreaking to watch someone who I grew up considering my aunt go from a vivacious woman who painted and traveled around the world to someone who couldn’t talk. I remember fearing and hating what the disease did to her. It saddens me that a talented writer like Terry Pratchett has this disease. It saddens me that anyone does. I’m happy to see a polish to honor Terry Pratchett.

I’ve never read Rebecca, but these polishes have me intrigued.

Have you read this novel? Would you wear these colors?

  1. Gorgeous collection but it’s the headband that stole the show this time 🙂 Love it!!!!

  2. Those polishes are gorgeous! Rebecca is such a haunting story and Hitchcock’s film adaptation is my favorite movie ever. As soon as I saw it I ran out and bought the book. Both are so enchanting.
