Cruelty Free Alternatives to Bath and Body Works

Cruelty Free Alternatives to Bath and Body Works

After receiving the upsetting news that Bath and Body Works is no longer cruelty free, I wanted to provide you with some cruelty free alternatives to Bath and Body Works. You can always check out Leaping Bunny’s extensive list of bath brands. Be sure to visit my friends’ blogs, Logical Harmony, My Beauty Bunny, and Vegan Beauty Review for more cruelty free goodness.

Cruelty Free Alternatives to Bath and Body Works

I can only surmise that with Bath & Body Works changing their policy from cruelty free to ‘except in rare cases when required by government regulations’ that B&BW is planning on doing what Victoria’s Secret did, and expanding into China.

Here’s the Bath & Body Works Animal Testing Policy (which is still on their site by the way)
Bath and Body Works Now Testing on Animals

Sadly, here’s what I received in email from B&BW
L Brands policy prohibits the testing of our branded products, formulations and ingredients on animals except in rare cases when required by government regulations. Through our involvement in the Institute For In Vitro Sciences, we are supporting research to develop additional non-animal alternative methods which we believe will ultimately result in the elimination of animal testing worldwide.

Here’s what L Brands (parent company of B&BW) sent me
Thank you for reaching out to us.  Despite the recent report on Logical Harmony, we have not changed our policy.  Bath & Body Works policy has been and continues to be that we prohibit the testing of our branded products, formulations and ingredients on animals except in rare cases when required by government regulations.  Bath & Body Works products are not sold in countries where testing is mandatory; therefore we are not testing on animals.  I hope this is helpful.  Thank you.

What cruelty free brands will you be using instead of Bath & Body Works?

  1. I know I’m like 2 years late to this story but bath and body works still doesn’t sell in China you can do their web page and see of the countries they sell in.

  2. I still won’t buy from a company even if they are cruelty free like the Body Shop. That makes no sense at all if the money is going to L’Oréal. L’Oréal is NOT cruelty free. Sooo wrong. Same as MAC. I would never buy from them again because they got bought out by Estee Lauder. They are not cruelty free. Honestly, all this testing on animals has to stop.

    1. Hi, I state on my blog that I support cruelty free brands even if their parent company is not cruelty free. It’s the same if you’re vegan and you shop at a grocery store. You’re not going to buy the meat, you’re going to buy the veggies, and it’s sending a message. Just like buying the cruelty free brands at Sephora sends a message.

  3. Body Shop is owned by L’Oréal. I actually like Whole foods brand 365. 365 is cruelty free and as far as I know not owned by a parent company that tests on animals. It is also pretty inexpensive. Jason also makes really nice products.

  4. You state as an alternative The Body Shop. But hasn’t it been purchased by L’loreal which in fact is doing animal testing and expanded into the Chinese Market?

    1. Hi! The Body Shop is cruelty free, just like Urban Decay is cruelty free and Leaping Bunny Certified. Both companies are owned by L’Oreal, who is not cruelty free. Urban Decay and the Body Shop are NOT selling in China.

  5. Personal care products are easy to find good replacements for. Its the air fresheners that will be a challenge. Anyone know of any plug in or candles that are cruelty free? And in Canada? Aye, there’s the rub…….

  6. wow, I didn’t realize that they had changed their policy. That’s bad news 🙁

  7. I used to be a HUGE B&BW fan. However, all the scents I loved started disappearing, and now there’s only like one. I do love the PocketBacs, as we go thru a lot of them!

    1. Actually 2006, not 2013. I used to love them but stopped after L’Oreal bought them out (they also became far too expensive for what they were as far as I’m concerned), and then I discovered their mass greenwashing. There’s a great article by Jon Entine that uncovers a lot of what Anita Roddick did.

  8. Bad news indeed , was the only brand was payable and somehow to find where I live,. we don’t get allot but some stuff in one store. Bummer indeed

  9. What a great round up of products. While I am admittedly not cruelty free I think it’s sad that a company will change such a core policy just to sell in countries that require animal testing. Sometimes core values HAVE to prevail over making money.

  10. At first I was heartbroken over this, but according to PETA, this brand has changed the wording of it’s philosophy as required by it’s parent company (who does sale in countries where animal testing is required by law). The brand is still on PETA’s list because in spite of their parent company, they are not selling to China. Do you think that perhaps this company is answering the way that they are instructed by their parent company?

      1. This is so sad 🙁 Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I know we all appreciate them. BTW I was wondering if you did a review on the Balm Voyage palette? I tried searching but I like your reviews on palettes the best 🙂

        1. I haven’t reviewed theBalm’s palette.I have a few of their palettes, like all 3 of the shady lady palettes and 1 palette that was gifted to me by a friend (can’t think of what it’s called right now). The shadow quality is nice but I’m not drawn to them like I am UD and Sugarpill.

  11. Another wonderful option is Shea Moisture! Their stuff smells amazing! I love especially the “Coconut Hibiscus” line (Body lotion and Body scrub!). But the “Raw Shea Butter” smells heavenly too ..oh and the “Lemongrass & Ginger” is also a dream! You see I am a big fan! LOL! Sissi

  12. Thank you for listing some alternatives to B&BW. Their somewhat contradictory statements don’t reassure me and I suspect that you are right in that they are planning to expand to countries that do require testing.

Another alternative company that I love is Haus of Gloi (http://www.hausofgloi.com). They are based out in Oregon and are a smaller, indie company. They have a pretty extensive general catalog and also have seasonal releases of scents that are ridiculously popular (to the point where they often sell out of those things really quickly). My two favorite products from them are their pumpkin butters (which are incredibly moisturizing without being greasy) and their bubbling scrubs. They also have bar soaps, lotion, perfume oil, hair oil, etc. I believe all of their products are vegan. Since scents are such a personal preference, I won’t recommend any particular ones, but the ones I love put me in a happy place every time I use them.

    1. I updated my perfume post, too. I was waiting to get my responses back from L Brand and Bath & Body Works before I made this post. I’m glad you find it helpful!
