An Introduction to Metrin Skincare

Today I’m sharing an introduction to Metrin Skincare with you. This is a brand that I tested out for over three months, in various ways, so that I could share my experience with you. Metrin is cruelty free, fragrance free, dye free, and gluten free. As a reminder I have dry, sensitive skin and rosacea.

This post has been sponsored by Metrin Skincare. All opinions are my own.

The Metrin Skincare line was originally developed in 1932 by Dr. Runnels. He had problematic skin and wanted to find a way to manage it, which he did. He shared it with his family and friends, and through worth of mouth it has grown. Their product focus is on getting your skin healthy and glowing.

Metrin is located in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Metrin products, are manufactured locally and sold exclusively at Metrin.com. They offer a personalized touch to skincare. If you’re about to have a baby or if you need extra help with your skin routine, you can contact them. They’ll be able to offer you helpful advice on how to tweak your routine with their products.

An Introduction to Metrin Skincare

An Introduction to Metrin Skincare

Metrin Skincare has just 5 steps in their regime. It starts with a double cleanse, which I believe they’ve been doing since their inception. Kind of reminds me of Korean Beauty in that regard, except they’ve been double cleansing for 80 years! I’m now hooked on double cleansing.

An Introduction to Metrin Skincare Deep Cleanser Review

1. Deep Cleansing

Deep Cleanser Ingredients
deionized water, certified organic cold-pressed sunflower seed oil, stearic acid, methyl propanediol, cetyl alcohol, triethanolamine, phenoxyethanol, aloe vera, tocopherol, allantoin, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, propylpara

When you start with the Deep Cleanser, it helps to remove any traces of makeup or gunk in your pores. The key ingredients are sunflower oil and aloe vera. Sunflower oil is great for cleansing to break down anything left on the skin, while aloe soothes the skin and moisturizes it. It’s really a great creamy cleanser. This to be the ideal cleanser for my dry skin. It doesn’t make my skin feel tight or stripped after using it.

An Introduction to Metrin Skincare Lathering Cleanser Review

2. Lathering Cleansing

Lathering Cleanser Ingredients
deionized water, sodium C 14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, stearic acid, certified organic aloe vera, hydroxyethyl cellulose, Cocamide MEA, panthenol, chloroxylenol, soy protein, phenoxyethanol, allantoin, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben

After you use a cleanser with oil, you need a cleanser that can gently remove any traces of oil left on the skin. The lathering cleanser does that, plus it has plant enzymes. These enzymes help to remove dead skin cells without over exfoliating. Over exfoliating is bad for sensitive skin like mine as it can cause more dryness, irritation and flakes. If you’ve got oily skin, over exfoliating can cause excess oil to be produced too.

Double cleansing leaves you with clean pores. And as you know, clean pores appear to be smaller. You can’t shrink your pore size, no matter what someone promises, but you can minimize the appearance of your pores by keeping them clean.

For the first two weeks of using these products, I was asked to leave out step two. However, once adding it in I had no issues with it and in fact I fell in love with how soft it left my face. The lathering cleanser feels very lightweight, silky, and has a lot of slip. This cleanser primes your face for moisturizer.

3. Vita Conditioner

Vita Conditioner Ingredients
deionized water, certified organic cold-pressed sunflower seed oil, stearic acid, aloe vera, methyl propanediol, cetyl alcohol, triethanolamine, phenoxyethanol, tocopherol, allantoin, EDTA, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, retinyl palmitate, ergocalciferol, ascorbic acid

Once your skin is clean, it’s important that you moisturize it, especially if you have sensitive skin! My face drinks up the Vita Conditioner. It has allantoin, which helps to smooth and sooth the skin, as well as lock in moisture. It’s packed with antioxidants, vitamins and fatty acids, making it great skin food. This is a more lightweight moisturizer, making it ideal for oily skin.

4. Protective Lotion

Protective Lotion Ingredients
deionized water, methyl propanediol, certified organic aloe vera, allantoin, allantoinate, panthenol, chloroxylenol

The protective lotion was a bit of a strange product to me at first. For the first two weeks I used it, I didn’t have the right top for it, so I experienced a lot of seepage with the product. However, once I had the mister that is supposed to go with it, it worked much better. I did find it best to mist the product on my hands and then pat it on my face. While it’s called a lotion, it’s really more of a facial mist that helps to tone and protect the skin.

An Introduction to Metrin Skincare Enriched Vita Conditioner Review

5. Enriched Vita Conditioner

Enriched Vita Conditioner Ingredients
deionized water, organic cold-pressed sunflower seed oil, stearic acid, methyl propanediol, cetyl alcohol, triethanolamine, aloe vera, phenoxyethanol, allantoin, panthenol, tocopherol, EDTA, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid, retinyl palmitate, ergocalciferol

The Enriched Vita Conditioner is a rich moisturizer with anti-aging ingredients, soothing aloe and sunflower oil. It’s also packed with Vitamins A, C, D, E and B12. My skin really loves this one.

Metrin Skincare Review - Cruelty Free - 5 Steps to Beautiful Skin

My Experience

With the Metrin Skincare System, you use the same products day and night. You don’t have to really think about what you’re doing with your routine, you just apply the products in the order they’re numbered. You do need to wait a bit in between products to apply the next one and to give them a chance to sink into the skin. Both the sunflower oil and aloe vera in the products have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which help sensitive skin like mine. One of the few downsides with this regime is having to wait in between products for your skin to absorb them.

Now, I know some of you will see parabens in the list of ingredients and be worried, so I wanted to link you to some information on parabens. Parabens are naturally occurring chemicals produced by vegetables and fruits. This isn’t to say that just because something is natural, it’s good for you. Arsenic is all natural and that is certainly not good for you!

I truly appreciate the airless pump packaging design. That means that all the antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients are kept safe so their efficacy isn’t affected. The pumps are super easy to use, even easier than a squeeze tube. It’s easy to get out the exact amount of product that you need, rather than too much or too little.

For the first two weeks, as I mentioned above, I omitted step 2. It was a little strange to me to be layering moisturizers on  my face during the day. After applying all of these products during the day I would finish with Supergoop Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40. It’s critical to wear SPF during the day, so don’t ever skip that!

For the next two weeks, I used the products exactly as designed. I noticed that I woke up every morning without any redness on my face from my rosacea. My skin looked like normal skin. As the day goes on though, my redness does come back. Still, it’s nice to wake up without redness and be red free for several hours!

I loved how my skin felt after a month, so I continued to use the system. However, I did tweak it by adding in my favorite serum – Holy Snails Shark Sauce (no sharks in it). I didn’t have any flare ups while using it. I’m currently still using the system because I love them and I think my skin looks really good right now. I do continue to use my serums as well. I’m such a serum junkie!

I can’t believe it never occurred to me before using the Metrin system to layer moisturizers on my face. I’ve often layered serums, but never moisturizers. Dry skin like mine appreciates the layering and drinks up the moisturizer.

  1. Re. “…a double cleanse, which I believe they’ve been doing since their inception,” actually, there used to be only one cleanser and only 4 steps to the Metrin program, at one time. I sold Metrin through the ’70s and the first half of the ’80s. I can’t remember why I stopped, actually. Perhaps because I moved away from Vancouver for some time. But I ran into an old friend and former customer who now lives in Hawaii and she mentioned that she still uses it. I think I’ll give the revised version a try.
BTW, they used to have a toner that was absolutely fantastic; when splashed on, it gave the skin a temporary tingling flush that was so refreshing (and bringing blood to the surface seemed, logically, to be a healthy prospect), but at one point, long before I stopped selling it, Macil (Sumpter) was required to cease using/remove from the formula whatever substance created that flush. It was so attractive and smelled very natural, sort like cinnamon.

  2. I’m allergic to parabens…. but I’m a skin care junkie, so I had to take a look at these!

  3. I layer serums and moisturizers. Initially I thought it’s for hair because of the label conditioner, lol

  4. This system looks so good and I like to double cleanse, especially when I wear makeup. It’s nice to see that this system is affordable, which is nice, too.

    1. @oliveandivy:disqus Thank you! We love our new packaging – the colors are to celebrate our 85th anniversary. It’s hard to believe we’ve been in Vancouver since 1932!

  5. I like that the same products are used for day and night. I feel overwhelmed with the amount of day and night skincare products I have right now! I’m glad this system is working out for your skin!

  6. The system is so interesting with two cleansers and two moisturizers. It seems like a great fit for dry skin as well as yours. I’m happy that you are rosacea free for a while. I like that they sell a one month kit to try it out. What do you notice in the way of fragrance with this line?

  7. This sounds like a great line, simple and effective! The price is pretty reasonable too. Thanks for putting this brand on my radar!

  8. My mom and I both used Metrin throughout the ’90s and it was an absolutely amazing product. This was before the Interwebz, so I had to go to Biogime stores to buy it, but when Biogime stopped distributing it, I had no idea where/how to buy it, and then over the years, I forgot the name. I did a search online not long ago, but still couldn’t remember what it was called. They used to have this absolutely amazing glacial minerals clay mask that I’m sad to see they don’t carry anymore. I will never forget the first time I used it. My mom and I were on a road trip and staying in a hotel overnight. It was time to get ready for bed and she encouraged me to use her little travel size Metrin system (the 1 oz. bottles). I used them all in order and when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see any blackheads—for the first time in my life. I announced my incredible amazement, and my mom bought me the system as a gift to start me off. About a week into it, I got little teeny tiny zits all over my face, but my mom had warned me it could happen as the system pulled the toxins out of my skin and it would go away in 1-2 weeks, which it did. The exact same thing happened to my best friend, whom I turned on to it. I found the system so amazing I used it for years, and even when I was in grad school and broke as a joke, I would always figure out a way to buy a new six-month supply when I ran out…even if it meant eating nothing but ramen for weeks on end! I really do think I need to buy a one-month trial and see how it works for me now that I’m in my 40s instead of my 20s. I have a ton of skin care products I *have* to finish first, however. I just can’t justify spending more right now when I have products on hand… but when they’re gone, I’m going to look into Metrin. If you haven’t noticed (ha ha!) I’m super excited to be reminded what this system is called and to know it’s still around!
