This month’s Independent Spotlight is with the vivacious Tracy of Venomous Cosmetics. Be warned, there are pictures of spiders behind the cut!

How long have you loved makeup?
Ever since I can remember! I guess it’s kinda strange because I come from a family of tomboys.

How many hours a day do you work? Days a week? How do you balance work and your family life?
At the moment, I work on the business for 12-14 hrs a day for 6 days a week and I’m a full time mama the rest of the time! I’m really lucky that I have such a supportive family. I could never get everything done without them!

What are your favorite colors to wear?
I’m obsessed with purple eyeshadow! I really like pairing purple, blue and pink.

What are your favorite lip colors?
I’m definitely a neutral kinda girl because I usually have so much going on with my eyes.

Do you have a favorite beauty trend?
Right now, I’m loving the Crackle and Shatter nail polishes. They need to make a silver!

Do you have a trademark look or trademark colors?
I’m usually always wearing Box Jelly, Tazelwurm and Sydney Harbour @ Night (white, pink and blue) with winged liquid liner and “Demi Wispies” falsies.

Why did you decide to do pressed shadows?
I have always loved pressed shadows for their easy travel ability. I have been an indie company customer for quite some time, but have rarely come across one that sells pressed shadows. Additionally, I have never come across one that sells pressed samples. I think samples are important to find out how you like the color before you invest the money into full size.

Where do you look for inspiration when you’re in the mood to create something new?
My spideys of course! They have inspired most of the colors in my line (even some which are not named after them).

How did you come up with your lip poisons?
I rarely wear lipstick and have always been crazy for glosses because of the shine factor. I wanted a gloss that didn’t dry your out your lips, wasn’t incredibly sticky and would be long wearing. I also wanted them to be semi-sheer and buildable so you can wear the color different ways.

What are your top 10 favorite colors you’ve created?
Sydney Harbour @ Night (Pressed)
Sea Urchin (Pressed)
Chupacabra (Pressed)
Tazelwurm (Pressed)
Phoenix (Pressed)
Purple People Eater (Loose)
Trouble (Lip Poison)
Genie (Lip Poison) *Formerly Cupid’s Arrow
Rising Star (Pressed- from the Upcoming “All Stars” Collection)
Blue-Ringed Octopus (Loose)

Can you tell us about any new collections you’re planning?
Oh, I have soooo many planned for this year, along with new products to add to the line. I have the “All-Stars” Collection coming out on 4/11 which was my grandmother’s birthday. It’s kind of dedicated to her because she was an incredibly influential person in my life, and it’s named because she always called me her little star. In addition to that, I have a smallish surprise collection coming in the next two weeks or so!

Have you ever dyed your hair crazy colors?
For the last six years, I’ve finally had it sort of normal (half white and half blue/black). In that time I have had a number of colors throughout the black (purple, teal, hot pink, and periwinkle).

What’s your skincare routine?
Don’t really have one. I guess I should.. O_O

What are your favorite authors or books to read?
With my son running around, I don’t really have time to read anymore..but I used to devour Danielle Steel’s sappy romance novels and pages and pages of medical bite/sting reports online (I’m very interested in venom properties).

Do you have any favorite tv shows?
House, The Event, Celebrity Apprentice, Shark Tank, Mystery Diagnosis, Hells Kitchen and American Idol.

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Not really a serious fan of either, but I would have to say Star Wars because I prefer movies.

What’s on your iPod or Pandora station?
Really too many to name any favorities. I think a little bit of everything sums it up.

Do you have any piercings or tattoos?
Piercings- Just two in each ear.
Tattoos- I’m currently planning my first one (a small one of the first spider I kept who is no longer with me “Jagermeister”..somewhere on my back).

What’s your favorite way to accessorize?
Realistic looking, clip-in, colored hair extensions.

Do you have any pets? (I know you have a lot!!!)
I sure do! Aside from the spideys and scorpions.. I also have 6 dogs (3 Aussies, 1 Rottweilier, 1 yorkie and 1 min-pin), 2 ferrets, 2 guinea pigs and a horse.

What colors do you like to decorate with?
Pink and black are pretty much my favorite colors for everything.

What color is your bedroom?
It’s teal at the moment.

What color is your office?
It’s an off-white color.

What do you do to relax?
I take my little one on walks in the late afternoon.

How do you pamper yourself?
I like to paint my nails.

Do you have a favorite chocolate?
White chocolate or mint chocolate!… or white/mint chocolate?

Can you tell me something about yourself that would surprise your fans?
I used to be the biggest…..arachnophobe! Until I was around 15, I was so terrified of spiders I couldn’t walk past one that was 10 ft away or go into a room until someone removed it. One day I got “trapped” in a room because there was a LARGE huntsman spider on the door.. I ended up stuck there for two hours, certain it would attack at any second. In the end, I noticed the pretty patterns and got closer.. Eventually, I was able to leave the room and I looked up that spider online. As I read more about them, and saw some AMAZING pics of some incredible looking spiders, the fear faded over time..and developed into a respect and then..a love.
